We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what role has risk played in your life or career?
If you do not take the risk how will you ever grow? Taking risks are scary but could bring you the most joy and change your life for the better. Life is all about taking risks because if you do not you will remain exactly where you are and never grow. Opening my own studio was a very big risk I had to take in order to grow more in my industry. I was at my previous salon for 5 years and just felt I was very stagnant. I was not able to build on top of what I was doing anymore. We all outgrow places and people and that’s okay. Another huge risk of opening my own studio was it happening all in the beginning of the pandemic, but I knew if I did not make the jump I never was. I have grown more in the past year in my career and as a person all because I took the risk.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Beauty and Brows by Sarah is located in Brookhaven. I specialize in brows and lashes, but also do spray tanning and body waxing. I have been doing brows for 6 years and lashes for 5. I feel as if I am different because I tweeze only and it is hard to find someone who just tweezes. I do all thing brows; brow shaping, brow lamination, brow tinting and microblading. With lashes I do lash extensions, tinting and lash lifts. My first salon I worked at really shaped me in this industry. It’s very competitive honestly, so it was definitely not easy, but if you are passionate about what you do people will recognize that and value and trust your work. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is you absolutely cannot give up. It takes time to build your clientele, it’s definitely not going to happen over night. I felt many times as if I was failing because my schedule was not filled. I am now 90% booked each month, if not more. My biggest goal in my work is to help my clients feel confident and happy with who they are. I want them to leave feeling beautiful and ready to take on the world!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh this is tough! I really enjoy being outdoors so I would definitely plan a lot of things outside. We would probably spend a lot of time by the water, lake or river. I have actually never been to the rooftop of Ponce City Market but would love to take a friend and check it out together! There’s a Chinese restaurant in Ponce City that is to die for , especially their green beans, but I cannot remember the name! We’d go get our nails done, probably a massage too, but mainly anywhere by the water is where you will find my friends and I. Anywhere with a patio to sit on and enjoy the day, have some drinks and some good food! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My father. If it weren’t for my dad’s support and encouragement I would definitely not be where I am at today. He has been there to help me through my frustration, tears, and when I feel like giving up. My dad has see me at my lowest and will be there at my highest moments. My daughter, 7, has also pushed me more than she will ever know. I do what I do and push myself to be able to give and provide the best life for her. She deserves all the credit honestly. She is my motivation.
