We had the good fortune of connecting with Mook Dawg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mook, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I never questioned why I began my journey in the artistic and creative field. Creativity has always been a defining aspect of who I am, standing out from my younger years. Whether it was showcasing a Michael Jackson performance at my 5th grade talent show or having a memorable style from grade school through high school, I have always strived to express myself uniquely. Becoming the artist I am today felt like a natural progression due to my deep connection to artistic expression. It’s clear to me that this path is where I belong, and I cannot imagine pursuing anything else.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art best manifests through my music, where my lyrics, beats, and unique flow tell the stories of my triumphs and tribulations. What sets me apart in the crowded world of music is my inherent uniqueness. Every person has their individuality, but for Taylor Kirkland-Harvey, better known by my stage name Mook Dawg, this uniqueness stems from a life that defies the odds.
Born with congenital heart disease, I endured four heart surgeries between the ages of 8 and 18. A near-death experience led to a life-enriching two-week Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World, which I received for surviving an intense open-heart surgery.
But my health challenges were just the beginning. Losing my mother to cancer at the tender age of 11, struggling with my sexuality, mental health, and facing societal tribulations—all these battles shaped me. My anger once led me down dark paths involving violence, firearms, and substance abuse. At my lowest, engulfed in the void of hopelessness, I didn’t see the light.
Yet, from those depths, I began to rise. Through sheer willpower, I transformed into a positive, inspiring, strong-willed, courageous, and risk-taking individual.
Growing up in Wilkinsburg, or “the Ghett” as locals call it, on the Eastside of Pittsburgh, PA, wasn’t easy. Wilkinsburg stands as a small borough emblematic of the struggles many urban areas face. Here, it’s all too easy to be ensnared by violence or drugs. But those who manage to avoid such pitfalls often embody a rare uniqueness.
Despite my brushes with the law, I realized early on that the path I was on wasn’t sustainable. Without a dependable support system, I was drained and tired of burdening my family. Striving for a better life, I turned to education.
Initially, I pursued a business associate degree. However, a year in, I shifted my focus to Graphic Design—a decision that resonated more with my creative and entrepreneurial spirit. As I approach graduation in 2025 with an Associate Degree in Graphic Communications, my excitement mounts.
My ventures don’t stop at music. I’m building my brand “Mook Dawg,” establishing a non-profit organization, and launching a video production company. My business acumen and relentless ambition drive every effort. Just as I once hustled for survival, I now hustle for success—channeling the same fire into my legitimate enterprises.
Whenever you think of me or encounter my music and brand, remember this: My story is not over.
I’m passionately chasing dreams, expressing my artistry, and making impactful contributions to my community. My life’s message is one of perseverance, courage, and endless possibilities.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week long itenerary in Pgh? Thats easy! If you are new to Pgh I’d point you in the direct of one of our many mom and pop diners. My favorite being Nancy’s along with a few others Deluca’s, Grandma B’s, Oleary’s, Kelly’Os, and even Monvalley Kitchen thats on the other side of town. After that id recommend some sight seeing Pittsburgh has 446 bridges some of the best being in our down town area. For a night out i’d recommend the North Shore for the aestetic. Family fun i’d obliviously say Kennywood Amusement Park or even one of our many Muesums. Good food for me is somewhere inbetween wholesome home cook recipes in an upscale fashion and i believe Xia’s in monroeville gives just that. If you like seafood Red Fin Blue is on the shore of the river and is a awesome place. Night life not my cupp of tea but if its your you’d problem have a good time on East Carson Street it is a street of bars and clubs convientently shaparoned by on foot officers. Last but not least dont forget Dessert. Id take you over to oakmont bakery.
