We had the good fortune of connecting with Montesha Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Montesha, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born and raised in Shelby, a small town in North Carolina. I was blessed to be reared by some very courageous, determined, faithful, intelligent, and strong individuals.
My mother taught me strength. She battled with lupus for over a century, but never once complained. She never allowed her disease to affect her willingness to work, care for her children, take care of her mother, and handle her everyday life, until she succumbed to this awful disease in 2001. I was 15 years old at this time. During her battle, I was responsible for a lot of her caretaking and was involved with her medical care. This helped me to realize my purpose was to love and care for people. I can remember caring for people starting at the age of 12 years old and I haven’t stop since. Many people thought I would fall apart after she passed, but this only encouraged me to strive for even more.
After her passing, my grandparents played a huge role in raising me. My grandmother’s taught my how to love and be the “rock” for my family. My grandfather was a paraplegic, paralyzed from the waist down. He taught me at an early age, that there was nothing that I couldn’t do. Oftentimes, I would see him doing things that most people in his situation would dean impossible. Have you ever witnessed a paraplegic get on top of a house? Well, my grandfather did. He would make different contraptions to aid him to do things that people with working legs could do, like driving a car and riding lawnmow. This has taught me to be a problem solver and solutionist, and to never let anything stop me from doing what I set my mind to do.
As an adult, I continue to live and embody the philosophies that were instilled in me, as a child. Being the oldest child, I was forced to grow up sooner, but I felt already prepared and equipped. I am not easily defeated. There were many times when people tried to discouraged me from stepping out on faith to start my business, but I knew deep down that I could accomplish any goal that I set my mind to. It was destined. Would it all be easy? No, but it is definitely doable. I’m truly thankful for my upbringing. It has truly made me into the strong successful woman that I am today.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the proud owner of Tailored Beauty & Wellness, in Gastonia, NC. I have been in business for 2 years now. I started in a 1 room suite. After the first 4 months of business, I was forced to relocate, not by choice, but it worked in my favor anyway. My main goal is to provide top tier services in my community, to improve overall health and wellness. If you look good, you feel good. I pride myself on making tailored plans for my clients individually. Everything doesn’t work for everybody. Having a mentor, was the biggest part of my success in business. Being educated on marketing, how to build collaborative relationships, and how to retain clients were some of the key points my mentor instilled in me.
Being a nurse entrepreneur is definitely not easy, but with perseverance and consistency, it’s doable. You will have some highs and some lows. Learning how to problem solve and push through is very important, and if you can’t fix it, don’t be afraid to pivot.
My clients get the “Tailored Experience.” Every single time they walk through the door. I’m always looking for better ways to enhance my knowledge regarding current and new treatments. I want the best for my clients and try to build a trusted rapport with each one. I’m open, honest, and tactful. If it is not a great fit for you, I’m going to let you know, not just take your money. Make sure you are getting services from professionally licensed and certified individuals. Don’t put yourself at risk dealing with scammers.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is one of the best cities in the US. The culture is amazing. There are some many places to visit to have an awesome time. Although I’m not from Atlanta, it is like a 2nd home. I am constantly coming into town to attend conferences, do collaborations with cohorts, attend business enhancement classes, network, provide IV Hydration and other concierge services to my ATL clients, visit with friends, and just to get away for some fun! There are countless things to do in Atlanta. Some of my favorite places to hang out for fun include Spaceman ATL, Blue Martini Buckhead, Embr, Trap City Café, Harold’s Chicken & Ice Bar, and plenty more. Most places have daytime and night time turn up. I prefer day parties. Spice House, Toast on Lenox, Copeland’s of New Orleans, Louisiana Bistreaux Seafood Kitchen Buckhead, Hattie B’s, and Pollo Campero are some of my go to places for amazing food. I haven’t been disappointed yet. There are so many attractions in Atlanta. If you’re looking for something family friendly, Centennial Olympic Park, MLK Jr. National Historical Park, World of Coca-Cola, Atlanta Botanical Garden, Black Wall Street, and Georgia Aquarium are great options. There are plenty of malls and outlets for shopping. There is always some type of concert or entertainment going on. With all my trips to Atlanta, I still haven’t had a tip in the bucket of things to do there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are a couple people that I would be remised if I didn’t acknowledge as a key component to my success. My grandmother put me through college. She purchased books, paid my rent, and afforded me living expenses, so that I didn’t have to work while in undergraduate school and could focus strictly on my education. I was able to become a nurse, and later obtained my master’s and post master’s, to become a double boarded and certified family and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She supported me in all my endeavors. She continued to help me learn how to manage money as an adult, so that I was able to fund my own business. Most importantly, she instilled faith and perseverance in me. These attributes help me on my daily journey, as a nurse entrepreneur.
Monica Swint, of Monica Swint Consulting, was a pivotal part of my success, as a nurse entrepreneur. She is my mentor and community sister. She guided me step by step with opening up my med spa, and continues to mentor, providing me with feedback and profitable suggestions. She pushed me to identify “my sauce.” Monica hosted a network of entrepreneurs luncheon, that afforded me the opportunity to create vital and lifetime authentic relationships. These relationships have elevated my growth as an individual, aided in scaling my business, as well as, developed mutually benefiting collaborations. I’m fortunate to have such a caring individual in my life, that wants nothing but to help and see me win.
