We had the good fortune of connecting with Marquis Deloach and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marquis, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my brands Devilish Rose and Book of Quis, would have to be the drive to help heal others. Since a child I’ve aspired to be a driving force impact in not just my community, but all communities of the world with others that look like me. Growing up in a community where we aren’t granted the tools to heal from traumas nor the tools to break generational curses. I wanted to see something different. Experience something different. The social stigmas surrounding therapy used to be so taboo. It was seen as something for, forgive me, “crazy people.” But being a father drove me to wanting to truly achieve that better aspect I wanted to bring to the world.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from others would have to be my resilience. I’ve had many challenges in life that forced me to grow up fast and be able to maintain my own. My own state of mind, state of peace, state of comfort. Coming from a single mother of 6 and being the oldest of the bunch I had to learn to be strong. Watching my mother try to figure it out on her own lead me to do the same. You become a product of your environment in a sort of way, but you soon realize (sometimes) the things in which we’ve experienced were trauma based, rooted in fear, and caused a false sense of self that is derived from those experiences.
The thing I’d say I’m most proud about is my ability to keep going! lol. It’s crazy because when I talk to others they always ask me “where do you get the drive to do xyz” or “how do you stay so dedicated” or even they talk about my resilience. Helping others overcome trauma is not an easy feat, but someone has to do it. People in my community wouldn’t dare trust the judgement of a therapist. But they would be more likely to be trusting of someone who is more like them. Someone who has been in their shoes. Someone who has had the same traumas as them. Someone who can fully understand the challenges they face in a daily basis.
It’s funny to me now how I got to where I am professionally, because I never seen it on the scale it’s on now. I started out with a clothing brand (Devilish Rose) because I always told myself “Oh I don’t want to be in the spotlight. I can complete my mission from behind the scenes. To now being a fulltime content creator on social media bringing awareness to mental health and trauma. that a lot of us face in “the hood.” How a lot of us just pass those things off as “well that’s just how I am.” When in all actuality we suffer from deeper issues that we don’t have the tools to manage. From being overly emotional men and not knowing how to regulate those feelings to fears keeping us rooted in trauma.
Was it easy? lol Of course not! There are still days when I find myself the healer struggling as well. I’ve learned the best way to overcome any challenges is to talk about them. Communication is such a huge gem! It’s a means of release. We tend to keep so many things bottled up thinking we’re protecting ourselves, but in reality, we’re doing more harm than good. Accepting the fact that we indeed do have traumas. That we don’t have the proper tools to navigate through life. That fear is keeping us rooted in these traumas.
Some lessons I’ve learned along the way was to truly believe in myself no matter what. It’s not others job to support your mission. It’s no one else’s job to save you. Not to take anything personal. And that no matter what your past looks like. You are the author of your story, and you can come back from just about anything. Who do you inspire to be?
I want the world to know Marquis. I’ve chose to stay in the shadows for far too long. But now is my time to truly show others in my community that if I can have these opportunities and do these great and wonderful things so can you! We think these goals are so unobtainable or not possible to people in “the hood” but that’s the farthest thing from the truth. I strive every day to show everyone around me that it is indeed possible for you to chase your dreams and live them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For a memorable week in Memphis, I’d kick off by taking my best friend to Shelby Farms daily for a morning hike, bird watching, enjoying the serene trails and beautiful scenery. We’d explore the different local farmers’ markets and nearby pick-your-own farms to gather fresh ingredients for our cooking adventures.
During the week, we’d explore different local food markets, discovering the best cuts of meat and international spices to craft our favorite dishes together. A visit to Overton Square would be a highlight, where we’d join in on whatever exciting event is happening, from live music to arts festivals.
And since Memphis is renowned for its barbecue, we’d indulge in a visit to one of the city’s iconic barbecue joints, like the famous One and Only, to savor the authentic flavors and soak in the essence of Memphis’ culinary scene.
Throughout our stay, we’d balance our culinary explorations with visits to historic sites like Beale Street, where we’d experience the vibrant nightlife and rich musical heritage of the city. It’s all about mixing local flavor with off-the-beaten-path adventures, ensuring a week full of fun, flavor, and unforgettable memories in Memphis.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to each and every person who has had a dream, desire, mission, and/or goal in life. There are a lot of people who give up on their dreams due to a number of reasons, but I’m dedicated to show people that no matter who you are or where you are in life those dreams are still very much possible. I also want to dedicate this to my children as an inspiration to show them what it truly means to believe in yourself no matter what you are faced with in life.
