We had the good fortune of connecting with Marie Carter owner of classic and The Classic Shoppe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My background is actually in education and I started my brand with the idea that I wanted to teach the world about my culture. Hip hop and its origins have so many layers and it is truly an art that should be preserved, not diminished to be a trend factory. I wanted to start my own movement to curate the culture.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally? What sets you apart from others?
Designing and being a part of every step in the production process keeps me busy.
What makes me proud about classic. is that all of the graphic designs are original. It is important to me that designs are creative and have details that encourage asking questions or searching to learn more about the culture. You see, there are a lot of… too many… companies creating and selling TShirt designs that have no clue about who they are profiting from. They just know the culture is profitable. I want to slow that up.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ok so even though I’m not from Atlanta, it’s like my third home lol. I feel like it’s hard to keep up with the newest attraction to show visitors even if you live here! But I like the Ponce Market.. it’s a vibe! Of course you gotta hit the Trap Museum and check out all the beautiful murals and art the city has to offer!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My pursuit for success is dedicated to my children. I quit teaching after 13 years a year after I had my daughter. I had no choice but go all in and giving her and my newborn son the best possible life are my motivation every day to keep going.
