We had the good fortune of connecting with Madison Crawley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madison, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Being my own biggest critic has pushed me to continually grow and improve my craft. I believe that as an artist, you will always be a student, and the minute you think that you have nothing left to learn is when you’ve failed.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always loved using my art as a means to bring people together and make people happy. In high school and college I found that I was a natural at drawing portraits, and embarked on the long journey of drawing animal and people portraits. Many of my clients commissioned these drawings as memorial pieces, and it brought me a lot of happiness to help people through a difficult time in their life and remember their loved ones who passed. Creating art in the service of others is what made me want to be a tattoo artist. Seeing my clients reactions when I create a piece for them that they love and is near to their heart reminds me why I do what I do every day.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spots in the city to eat is a little local bar Bantam Pub, or any of the creative choices inside Ponce City Market! When the weather is warm, I love to grab a bird scooter and go down the BeltLine to Piedmont park (with my little Jack Russel Tony, of course). If I’m traveling out of the city, my friends and I love hiking. Yonah Mountain is a crowd favorite!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My amazing mentor Chris Bowen who gave me a chance and took me on as an apprentice, my wonderful boyfriend Tiaan Krige who supported and encouraged me through all of the hardships and self doubt, and my family who have always believed in me.
