We had the good fortune of connecting with Lloyd and Natosha Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lloyd and Natosha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Initially, we really wanted to tell good stories. We were tired of storytellers being scared to take risks, off characters, and have finality. Then, we also started to think about the kinds of, not only stories, but characters we always wanted to see growing up and wanted to fill the void that was left from the lack of seeing characters that look like us. From there we strived to create stories that were unique and featured Black and POC characters from all walks of life.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Our line of work is in indie comics. While we hire the interior artists, we do all the writing and character designs. What sets us apart is that we are a black family owned company, and all of our Black women are written by or have input from a black woman every step of the way. We are very proud of all the content we’ve been able to make in such a short period of time, and that we have stuck to out overall goals and mission.
We got to where we are now through patience and finding several artists who shared our passion for storytelling. It was not easy at all, but we kept going. Nothing worth doing is easy, but if you push through, it will be worth it. Having each other is also great because we work well together and are good at encouraging each other.
We have learned that as a community, it’s important to find the right people to guide you. Find people who share your vision, because not everyone is there to help. It’s a difficult, yet rewarding experience.
We would like people to know that our brand stands for something. We are not only telling amazing stories, but we’re also showing that we are not a monolith. We have characters of different sexualities and backgrounds dealing with all different issues and having different life experiences.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Each day will have a different activity.
Picnic in Piedmont Park, The Civil Rights Museum, Georgia Aquarium, Joystick Gamebar, and Battle and Brew.
For breakfast
Buttermilk, Breakfast Club, Flying Biscuit, Gocha’s
Because 1 day, lunch is a picnic, and 2 of these places can handle dinner, for lunch/dinner we pick a few spots outside of where we’re hanging out.
The Corner Grille, Novu, The Vortex
