We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Flagg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind Obviously Vintage aka OV, basically started with how I like to dress comfortably but still fresh af. Haha, I love oversized clothes, like wearing your favorite hoodie that happens to be your boyfriends. I wanted to create a brand that Women and Men could appreciate, starting with comfort/style to quality and fit. My designs are inspired by late 80s to 90s fashion trends, with a Modern twist. Those two are my favorite era and I see a lot of creatives and individuals inspired by that era as well. So why not give the people what they want, but give it a Modern twist!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
This journey has not been smooth at all, it has been a roller coaster. I could go on for days about the times where I cried, laughed, and cried some more, but I look at it now as a stressful learning experience. When becoming an entrepreneur, it is never easy, because this is something that you never done before and you do not know what to expect or what to look out for. Staying in your budget, meeting the demand of the customers, keeping up with ads and marketing and learning how to manage inventory that is not moving as quickly as you would like is stressful when it hits you all at once. You can always try to prepare for the worst but you never know what can happen. There were times where I did not believe in myself anymore and started to lose focus. There were times where I came to work like a zombie and had to convince myself that I was okay when I really was not okay. I would go in the bathroom and cry and pray with my mother just to make it through the day. The stress of moving away from my home, family, friends, and being looked at as the one who “MADE IT” started to weigh on me. I had to keep up this image of the small town girl who “Made it” and is doing what she said she was going to do. That pressure leaves no room for error or failure, so when I felt myself starting to fail with my brand and not being where want to be in life, it felt like I let everyone down who was counting on me. I had to come to the conclusion that you can not please everyone and stress yourself out by doing so. I began to tell my story on social media of the daily struggles I go through with the business and my personal life, and showing people that you will hit some bumps in the road but you just have to keep going and never give up. By letting people in and sharing my journey, it made me feel better and it also helps encourage others to step out of their comfort zone and take risks in their career. I am most proud of my collection being in a boutique and selling out in less than a month. It was nerve recking to see customers look at my pieces and not knowing what they actually think about the items until they actually put it on. I feel that my brand is like comfort food, when you’re feeling down put on your favorite OV sweat suit or lounge wear, and have a self care day, while being comfy and still stylish.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my girls come to town our first stop is the Package Stores. We have to get our favorite alcoholic beverages and wine honey. Then we are going to Cirque Daiquiri Bar and Grill. It is a lounge that has amazing food and drinks! It’s definitely a vibe there! I would also take them to Little Five Points to do a little thrifting and shopping, then when night falls we are hitting up Edgewood Ave to bar hop!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow where do I start! There’s a lot of individuals I could shout out! I definitely have to should out my group of friends, who are all pursuing their dreams and making major accomplishments! First my best friend Taylor Balwin, who happens to be finishing dental school next year, along with being a self taught Jewelry Designer. She has her own jewelry company by the name of Klay’d Kreations. The pieces she creates are so cute and fun! Taylor has been a major support system with my brand and vice versa! My other biggest supporters are my best friends Jovita Lee , Ashley Lyons, Bianca Elliott, and my boyfriend Joe aka Daded.Mov.
