We had the good fortune of connecting with Larry Silver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Larry, how do you think about risk?
I’ve always seen risk as a chance to learn. Taking a risk is an opportunity to be on the other side of not knowing.
Risk in my journey has allowed me to have a strong sense of self. I trust myself to still be who I am while in the process of being vulnerable to any outcome when a risk is being taken. As an artist, I see risks as a challenge to ignite my creativity and take away labels such as good or bad, instead visualizing them as an evolution.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work revolves around the aesthetic of black people embracing their image. The importance of “being” tells a story in many ways from facial expressions, figure position and abstract elements of nature. The youthful curiosity of creating is what I held on to as my foundation. Being that kid that loves to build with legos and having that experimental unlimited boundary with my imagination is the source of my creativity today. It was not easy keeping that youthful part of myself through this journey. It’s like society has a mission to strip that part of you away. My way of overcoming obstacles was having the belief that what I was doing with my craft was bigger than me. It’s special being able to witness how my work may touch someone who needs it whether they are already here or yet to exist in this world, and for people to see themselves in my work either through the message, ethnicity represented, or overall aesthetics.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love live music. The Perfect Note in Atlanta is definitely a spot I have to visit when I’m in the city for great music and top notch food.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to my wife Ashley Silver for being so supportive and involved in my journey as an artist.
