We had the good fortune of connecting with Kym Royal, MBA and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kym, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve had an entrepreneurial spirit from a very young age. I started my first business shortly after graduating high school and enrolling in a cosmetology school as a manicurist. Once I passed the state board exam and got my license, I registered for my first LLC and worked in a nail salon as an independent contractor. I learned a lot about managing money, filing taxes, and the importance of having a solid business plan.

Although I eventually closed that business and enrolled in a university, I never forgot the feeling of satisfaction I had from starting my own business, and I knew someday I was going to take the leap of faith again and start another business. Fast forward to the present, I’ve started four businesses (a total of five including the manicurist business), three of which are currently operational.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m passionate about my work and I spend hours learning how to improve my techniques by taking online classes, talking with other professionals to share useful tips, and just networking in general – I can’t stress enough how much the power of networking has had throughout my professional career.

When I started my medical billing and coding business I knew I had the knowledge and qualifications to run the business but I had no idea how I was going to attract clients other than going door to door or sending out mailers. One day just in a casual telephone conversation with the representative I used for my billing and coding software I learned that he had customers nationwide calling him all the time requesting the services of experienced billers and coders. I asked if he would include my business’ contact information to their referral list, and within four to five months of starting my business I went from having one client to over fifteen. Often, we think networking has to be this formal, scheduled event but when you think about it, a brief conversation while standing in a department store checkout line can turn into an opportunity to gain a new client or make a positive new connection.

In my most recent luxury hair extensions business launch, I’m currently searching for someone who is social media savvy to form an “In Kind” or service barter type of agreement with; that individual would create content and a social media presence to promote and grow my brand, and I’ll install and provide regular maintenance for any luxury hair extension service I offer. Who knows, maybe that person is reading this article. That’s the beauty of networking.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Atlanta has so many interesting places to go and things to do but I would definitely have to say Centennial Olympic Park area is a fun family-oriented place to go if you’ve never traveled to the city before. Many top attractions are right in that general area like the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, and National Center for Civil and Human Rights. If you’re a nature buff, like me the Atlanta Botanical Garden is a must visit destination. Foodies would love the Sweet Auburn Festival and some of my top dining spots are Desta, Ethiopian cuisine and Six Feet Under for their king crab legs!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s so wonderful to be able to give a shoutout to those that have helped shape me into the person I am today; however, my list of shoutouts is as long as any Oscar winner whose ever had the music cue in during the middle of their acceptance speech! I really am blessed to have supportive friends and family who encouraged me to follow my heart and live my dreams out loud. Of course God is the main source of my success. I’m nothing without a spiritual foundation. My parents (Yvonne & Perry) and my children (Tyler & Jaylah) have been hands down thee most deserving of a shoutout!

Early on it was my parents who never stifled my dreams of becoming anyone and anything my child self wanted to become, later my children gave me a greater sense of responsibility, drive, and dedication to be the best provider and role model for them that I could be. There’s so many other people deserving a mention and I’m thankful everyday for the close group of friends who have really been there for me through thick and thin. although I can’t mention everyone by name here, I hope I’ve told them individually how special they are to me.
