We had the good fortune of connecting with Kulaura Crawford and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kulaura, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
The one piece of advice that I disagree with and also DESPISE is when people tell you that you don’t need to sleep/rest to achieve your goals and dreams. I loath the saying “I’ll sleep when I die” because rest is essential to seeing and feeling your dreams. If you don’t stop and rest, your body will most definitely do it for you. As I’ve grown older I’ve learned that the concept of rest, not just physically but also mentally, can be used as a way to get ahead in life. When I honor my need to rest, I get better results as opposed to if I’m running off of no sleep and just fumes. So whenever I see or hear someone saying ‘they’ll sleep when they die’, I try my best to encourage them to slow down and rest.

What should our readers know about your business?
K. Crawford Skyn Studio originally started as /,self’ker/ Esthetics back in 2020. I started my Esthetics and skin care career in May of 2019. Esthetics was the reason I moved from Tennessee to Atlanta because there weren’t any reputable programs in my area. I was ready to get away from my small town living and mindset in Tennessee so I used the esthetics program at Health and Style institute as a stepping stone. I’ve always been a person to try things out to see if I like it and eventually end up losing interest but with skincare I knew that this was my calling. There’s many different avenues that esthetics can take you and if you’re a person like me, you’re willing to try it all. That’s what keeps me excited. Learning about how the body works, how different ingredients affect different things, and just the beauty of making someone feel good about themselves on the inside and outside. It was easy coming into the industry because it peaked my interest but once I was in and licensed, it was hard. Gaining clientele, marketing, advertising, etc is all hard for me because I’m a VERY introverted person on top of being a mom and balancing a very demanding career with the Department of Justice. I’m learning that in order for me to continue to be successful, I have to not be afraid and put myself and my business out there because it’s so precious to me. I got into the beauty industry and started my business because it represents me. I love all things beauty. I enjoy being a listening ear and a helping hand to someone trying to boost their self esteem and feel good about themselves.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a person that likes to relax and enjoy some good food so on a Monday we would probably stay home and cook a good dinner and watch movies. Mondays are usually my “do nothing days.” Tuesday we would go to Atlantic station to eat bbq and have drinks and The Pig and The Pearl and watch a baseball game afterwards. On Wednesday we would go and enjoy the views and atmosphere at Piedmont park. On Thursday I would go to New Orleans Daiquiri Bar and Grill in Jonesboro. The mixed drinks and food is *chef’s kiss* magnificent. On Friday we would go to Puttshack and play a few rounds of games. After puttshack, we would go up to the Rooftop LOA to enjoy the view and wind down. On Saturday we would go to Foxhall Resort in Douglasville to ride the ATV’s and practice at the shooting range. Last but not least on Sunday, we would go to SpaLand in Duluth and spend the whole day there relaxing in the different saunas, getting massages, and enjoying some self care.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout series to my two esthetic instructors, Karen Brown and Sharon Wright. Honestly if it wasn’t for these two ladies I don’t think I would be the disciplined, caring and result driven esthetician that I am today. While I was in school they gave me the best of both worlds while also encouraging me and everyone to keep going despite what was happening in the world. Karen Brown was the one that gave us tough love and helped build our character. She constantly pushed everyone to keep going no matter how long it may take us to get done with whatever we had to do. Sharon Wright was the one who went more in depth on the esthetics world from her experience. She was very knowledgeable of our coursework and things not taught in our profession. Although there is a list of people I could name, these two made me the esthetician that I am today.
