We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Morgan-vann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
By the end of my career, I want to have made an impact on the beauty industry in a way that changes how we as Black beauty professionals view our craft.

I want those coming up behind me to feel more informed about the importance of the value of a client, gaining financial literacy and fiancial freedom. I want them to think less about the followers, likes and social media fantasy lives they see and more about how they can make a positive impact on the industry now by providing excellent services, getting paid what they’re worth and developing a solid exit strategy for when they decide to leave this industry.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As the owner of my little slice of beauty heaven, 5th+Harlow Salon, I get to share my knowledge and skills as a master Cosmetologist and wig maker with women who just want someone to help them with their hair issues and make them feel more beautiful.

I am most proud that I actually get to do one of the things I love everyday and get paid for it. How cool is that?

I would say it wasn’t easy to get to where I am today. It takes hard word and dedication to get anywhere of substance in your life. So, no. It wasn’t and still isn’t easy. I have to stay inspired (which can be hard) and motivated to get out of my head and see the bigger picture.

That is to create a salon where women feel heard, seen and have their needs met in a safe, fun and professional environment. I also need to find ways to stay relevant and innovative on sometimes a dollar and a dream. Lol! It can be stressful. However, I just pray, keep one foot in front of the other and thank God everyday that I don’t have to close my salon. I thank Him for sending me clients who like coming to me and share those experiences with others. I am truly blessed.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to never give up. You can change the way you do something. You can even pivot or stop a thing, but you should never give up. If you don’t try, how will you know if it will work? The biggest failure is never trying at all.

I want anyone reading this to know that you must always follow your dreams. However it has to happen, explore it. No one knows better than you what your purpose is. Go get it!!

5th+Harlow Salon is just a snippet of the dream salon experience I will create before I retire. I am constantly working, learning and sharing the things I learn with my clients and any one who wants to hear it. My brand is all about education + action= results. When we equip our clients with thr knowledge they need to achieve their hair goals, we can set clear, achievable goals, build routines to reach those goals and when done properly, with both the professional and client working as a team, the results will be amazing! That’s my philosophy. That’s my brand.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I honestly don’t get to go out much. I’m either working at the salon, making wigs or going to church on Sundays.

I hate this traffic so much, so I rather just chill at the movie or work on my book.

If I had a suggestion for a friend, I would really like to take them to the Beltline to get some fresh air and exercise. Then, we could go do an Escape Room or a VR Experience. Later that evening, we could go to dinner at Ponce City Market. After which we could sit on the terrace next to the fire pit, laugh at everything, vent and just look out over the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shout-out to my uncle, Award-Winning Master Cosmetologist/Shear Genius, Gregory Morgan, who continues to inspire me to keep going and doing my best in this industry every day with his funny and creative Instagram/Facebook videos.
