We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelsey Jordan-talhouk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelsey, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve always felt drawn to the arts – whether it’s theater, music, or fashion.
For me, I began illustrating at a young age, hoping to pursue a career in fashion design. I attended the Art Institute of Atlanta, prior to them closing, and never completed the program. During my hiatus, I decided to pursue cosmetology full-time. Perfecting a skill I already had. I wouldn’t change my journey one bit.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been professionally licensed for over a decade now. At 32, I definitely feel there’s still more to learn and there are other ways I can build within this career.
For beauty professionals starting their career, I will say it’s definitely a marathon and not a sprint. You’ll endure many challenges as an entrepreneur, but if it is your passion, stay steadfast, and it will all be worthwhile.
Having positive colleagues, and mentors will definitely help you push through challenging times.
I’ve always been a firm believer on leaving your problems at the door.
Your workplace, especially as a creative, should be a place of solace.
If you can master separating personal from business, you’ve conquered half the battle. Now create!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I’m being honest, I’m definitely a homebody. But I am a foodie! So I’m always down to try new restaurants. A personal favorite of mine would be Marcus Bar & Grille. Another place would be Breaker Breaker-but virtually anything on the beltline is good. IYKYK!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For starters, I’d definitely attribute my drive to my parents. Whom were very supportive, and sort of put the bug in my ear to obtain my cosmetology license.
Throughout my career, I’ve been blessed to cross paths with amazing stylists! All of which I’ve learned from.
I’d definitely give a shoutout to Najah Aziz, owner of Like The River Salon and Spa for helping me hone my craft as an assistant-when it came to short styles.
As well as Raw Mi Beauty (formerly known as W On Ponce), for continuing my education and allowing to blossom as a stylist. Ultimately growing my clientele.
Lastly, I’d love to give a shout out to my amazing husband, Trocon! Also a creative. His drive makes me want to go harder everyday-I couldn’t do it without him! “ Two hustlers are always better than one!”
