We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Borders and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Work-life balance has definitely shifted over time—and honestly, I don’t look at it as “balance” in the traditional sense anymore.

Early on, it was about trying to separate the two—giving equal time and energy to both. But as both my business and my family have grown, I’ve realized it’s less about perfect balance and more about intentional integration.

As a business owner and a stay-at-home mom of two, my days aren’t always predictable. Some seasons require more focus on clients and growth, while others call for me to be more present at home. I’ve learned to give myself flexibility (and grace) in that, rather than trying to force every day to look the same.

What’s changed most is my perspective—I now measure success by alignment instead of balance. If I’m building a business that supports my family, while also being present for the moments that matter, that’s a win.

It’s not always perfectly divided—but it is purposeful.

What should our readers know about your business?
MadeSouthern Marketing is a digital-first branding and marketing agency based in Madison, GA. We were built on a simple but powerful belief: every small business has a story worth telling.

What sets us apart is our “strategy-first” approach. We define exactly what you want your audience to remember before we ever touch a design file. By translating abstract ideas into concrete visual identities, we help our clients move beyond just being “seen” to truly being chosen. For us, success isn’t about vanity metrics like follower counts; it’s about crafting an irresistible offer that drives measurable results for the right audience.

My path started at Georgia College & State University, where I built integrated marketing plans for businesses in the Atlanta area. I eventually founded MadeSouthern as a passion project alongside a corporate career, driven by a desire to provide high-impact digital marketing strategy for local entrepreneurs. The road wasn’t always easy. Transitioning the business to full-time while navigating motherhood and home builds added a layer of complexity that required extreme discipline (and grace).

However, those challenges taught me that the strongest brands don’t become generic to grow; they stay deeply rooted in their original mission and culture. Lessons from the Field

Through years of partnering with small businesses, I’ve gathered three non-negotiables for growth:
1. Stop targeting everyone: If you try to appeal to everyone, you connect with no one. You have to speak directly to your true audience.
2. Transformation over features: Customers don’t just buy products or services; they buy the transformation they provide.
3. Patience is a virtue: Impactful brand storytelling takes time and deep collaboration. I’ve learned to be a strategic partner to my clients, not just another vendor.

I’d like the world to know that MadeSouthern Marketing exists to bring your local business into the modern, digital-friendly world without losing its heart. We are here to help you scale with purpose, ensuring your brand stands out in a competitive environment through thoughtful strategy and creative excellence.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting, I’d want them to experience the charm of Madison and the ‘lake life’ of the surrounding area. Our week would be the perfect blend of small-town tradition and high-end relaxation.

We’d start right here in the Madison Historic District. I’d take them on a walking tour to soak in the antebellum architecture and the incredible floral landscaping that makes this town so iconic. It’s the ultimate ‘sip and see’ experience.

For a change of pace, we’d spend a morning wandering through Historic Downtown Greensboro, hunting for treasures at the Greensboro Antique Mall before grabbing a slice of the world-famous buttermilk pie at The Yesterday Cafe—it’s a local legend for a reason!

Of course, we’d have to head to the water. We’d spend a full day on a tritoon, soaking up the sun and making the mandatory stop at Jumping Rock. It’s this massive 10-foot boulder right on the water that’s basically a nature-made playground.

As the sun sets, the vibes are all about the views. We’d boat over to Gaby’s by the Lake at The Ritz-Carlton for some casual poolside dining—the lobster nachos are excellent.

To wrap up the trip, we’d grab a craft beer at Oconee Brewing Company, which is housed in a stunning renovated cotton mill.

It’s the perfect mix of Georgia history and lake life fun!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Success is never a solo mission, and mine is a collection of support from many corners.

First and foremost, my family. Their belief in me, especially through the seasons of uncertainty, the long weekends on my laptop, and the big life transitions of motherhood and home builds, has been my steady ground. Their support has truly meant more than I can put into words.

I also want to dedicate this shoutout to the small business owners who initially took a chance on me while I was building MadeSouthern Marketing. They didn’t just hire a vendor; they trusted a partner. Their willingness to collaborate has allowed us to move beyond just ‘graphics and content’ and into the heart of true storytelling.

Lastly, I want to recognize the local business community. I do what I do because I believe these entrepreneurs deserve to be seen. In my eyes, success isn’t a limited resource—it expands when we support one another and help local voices be heard. To every client who has allowed me to turn their vision into something impactful: your passion is the engine behind mine.

Success for me isn’t a limited resource; it expands when we support other small businesses and help them get their voices out there. Thank you to everyone who allowed me to turn their ideas into something impactful—your passion is the engine behind mine.
