We had the good fortune of connecting with Ju’vette Gray And Demetria Tinsley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ju’Vette Gray and, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting our own business was why not? What is stopping us from carrying on our family’s legacy of owning a business and leaving something behind for our family? We work everyday of our current lives, working for someone else, why not invest the time and energy in our own business. The same inheritance our Grandparents instilled in us when they started many businesses. We have the potential to honor our family legacy while paving the way for future generations. Building our own business could perhaps inspire those around us, showing them that following a dream is not just admirable but achievable.
What should our readers know about your business?
Our product is not just an ordinary honey; it is an artisanal delight crafted with love and intention. Infused with a variety of fruits and vegetables, Grandma’s Honey Stuff serves a dual purpose: it is a delicious food additive and a soothing remedy for colds and coughs while hitting you with a hint of nostalgia. We believe in the power of nature and tradition, and so we strive to honor the recipes of the past while adding our own special touches. What truly sets Grandma’s Honey Stuff apart is the care we infuse into every aspect of our craft. As a two-woman operation, we personally handle every step, from carefully infusing the honey with the finest ingredients to printing custom labels, marketing our product, and ensuring it reaches your doorstep in pristine condition. Each batch is made by hand, allowing us to maintain the highest quality standards and a personal touch that mass-produced alternatives cannot replicate. We will say, it is not always easy and we are always learning. We had to start over quite a few times, been told NO but companies on how it can be sold, packaged and labeling but we did some tweaking and finally at a place we are totally pleased with our packing. Owning a business is hard since we have 9-5 jobs and a family so learning to balance the two is quite a show at times. Since we are a small woman owned business, we do have to hit the streets, vend, and promote often to keep the inventory up. It’s a struggle at time because Grandma always get paid and sometimes we don’t lol.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
How about we kick things off with a rejuvenating morning yoga session at Yoga Infinitum on Saturday? It’s my girl’s place, and I guarantee we’ll leave feeling revitalized. We can then muster up a hearty appetite and grab some delicious food at Real Milk & Honey in College Park. Their dishes are the perfect blend of hearty and um sorta healthy; I can almost taste it already! After fueling up, we can take a stroll around the Atlanta Beltline and enjoy some people-watching. It’s such a lively spot with endless interesting characters passing by; it’ll give us a chance to relax and catch up.
To close off what I’m sure will be an action-packed weekend, let’s indulge in a little self-care. We can hit up Regenerating Me Crystal and Salt Lounge in Conyers for a spiritual movement session. It’ll be the perfect way to cap the weekend, revitalizing our spirits for the week ahead.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to give a shoutout to our Grandmother, Mary Lee Lewis, who started us on this journey. She used to make a recipe something like we use now that was water based remedy for colds and coughs. This recipe was shared amongst family and passed through generations. We one day decided we wanted to bottle up this miracle and sell it to share with the world. We want to give shout outs to all the family, friends, and loved ones whom encouraged us to bottle up our infused honey and sell it. Shoutout to our spouses and kids who patience, dedication and unpaid hours of labor continue to move us forward. Major shoutout to USDA in Athens who gave us the opportunity to put our product in place for testing, labeling information and valuable resources at a feasible/reasonable cost. Not to toot our own horns, SHOUT OUT TO Demetria and Ju’Vette (to one another) for the insight, encouragement, patience and stamina to keep it going. Shout to our loyal customers who continue to support and tell a friend that told another friend. Every word of support helped transform what was once a dream into a tangible reality. We look forward to this next chapter, where each jar of our infused honey represents not only our passion but also the love and tradition passed down from Grandma Mary. Together, let’s continue to celebrate her gift and embody the spirit of family that binds us all.
