Meet Julie Demers | Holistic Pelvic Therapist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Demers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julie, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work-life balance is constantly changing in my life. Before kids, I thought it was essential to keep time for fun activities even if I loved my work and it kept me busy. Now that I have 3 kids, it’s even more critical to keep that in mind. That is why I started my business: to give me more freedom, but it didn’t go as planned at first.
Starting a business is A LOT of work. A lot to think about, and I found myself solving problems in the middle of the night while I was learning all I needed to know about how to manage an online service.
While I was definitely working on my passion to help women with pelvic floor symptoms, I was definitely being deprived by all the other things that I needed to manage.
I realized (a bit late) that my whole family was suffering from my added stress, lack of sleep, and time to do things that I loved. My rhythm needed to change.
I created some hard boundaries around the family schedule, so that I would have time to play with my kids, and spend quality periods with them, the mood changed quickly with me taking better care of myself and being more aligned with my values. I think that balance needs to be reassessed periodically because life changes, but the important idea is to keep your values aligned with your schedule and choices to have balance.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have created an online program to help women who suffer from pelvic floor symptoms like urine leaks and/or prolapse. There are FAR too many women that feel embarrassed or ashamed because they don’t have control down there. What’s worse is that they think that it’s just part of motherhood or aging! I wanted this business to help support women and create a safe place to talk about those symptoms and their solutions.
I am very proud that I have managed to create a program that women can do at home at their own pace and it works. It is heartwarming to see how lives are changed when women regain control of this part of their body. For me as a physical therapist, it was a challenge to create something that worked, even if I wasn’t in the room with them. I still get to support them in a group coaching session every week.
It’s totally different than what I was used to, I stumbled on a lot of challenges, creating online resources and learning how to manage computer programs, but I am getting much better at it!
What I want people to remember from my work is that we need to talk about those issues. We need to give women the opportunity to heal their symptoms no matter how long they have been living with them and empower them to live their best life!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live close to Seattle! If someone would visit the city with me, we would spend one or two days in the city, and the rest would be in nature! The City has much to offer, from the Space needle, to the gum wall! It’s a very weird but beautiful city! I love the views of the mountains surrounding it, and the water all around.
The best thing to eat here is fish, from oysters to salmon, to clam chowder, take your pick!
But my favorite place to go is either by the beach on a low tide period, in the mountains for a hike, or on the water with a paddle board or a kayak.
Even if Seattle is known for it’s rain, summers are beautiful here, and it’s the best time to take advantage of all the great outdoors around the area!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my husband. Since day one, he has supported me, believing in my passion and expertise in helping women with pelvic floor issues. He has seen me grow personally and professionally seeing me get the benefits of my approach but also hearing the fantastic results my clients are getting. He is always there when I have doubts and believes in the difference I am making in the world. I also want to give a shoutout to my kids, who are proud of their mom for creating this service, and appreciate that I am helping others be their better self!
