We had the good fortune of connecting with Jayde Harville and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jayde, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Before the pandemic, I worked primarily as an elementary teacher, math tutor, and church choir director. My purpose in life was to serve people; provide them with something of value or something to make them better or even just smile. When the world shut down in March of 2020, I felt useless. It started to weigh on my heart and affected my mental stability. I had to get busy and be useful again, so I made a few shirts and masks for my immediate family. Everyone wore them to church one Sunday and the rest is history. I felt needed again. In the middle of the pandemic, I found a way to bring some joy to those around me and ultimately some who were farther away.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My designs are spiritually and culturally inspired. As a result of the start of the business, I believe it is important to uplift people when they read or see the designs on shirts, masks, or jackets. The goal is never to separate or put others down, but I am adamant about celebrating spirituality, triumph and the culture. I have 2 favorite designs so far (“Faith & Common Sense” – because its possible to have both and “I’m Rooting for Everybody Black” ~Issa Rae because she was so confident about her statement without belittling anyone else present. We’re rooting for each other and that is a giant leap from the days and times we tear each other down) I have 2 or 3 new designs that I am sure will resonate with customers and other creatives. I’m excited to see them once they’re released.
I can honestly say this journey as an entrepreneur has been a completely new experience because I am accustomed to the life and mindset of an educator. I’ve had to readjust my thinking and toughen my skin a little. Fortunately, I’ve had some amazing mentors that readily provided advice and tips on how to grow my business.
I honestly want the world to know that your vision is unique and someone is waiting on what YOU offer. People could turn in all directions to buy a shirt for a quicker turn around and cheaper prices than what I offer, but they like MY designs, MY customer service, and MY company. People will always support authenticity.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
While I love my city, I’m not as big on going out as I once was. However, I’ve experienced most of the new city attractions such as Protective Stadium, Uptown, and concerts from my favorite artists in or visiting the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family is a my greatest support system. My mom, God rest her soul, was the inspiration behind my career choice and the name of my businesses. She worked in several different capacities from childhood until she passed in 2014, always serving and loving people. She suggested I try Elementary Education as a major in undergrad and it has been the best decision by far. I did not realize that even after she passed, her legacy would push me the way it has. When I found a way to help others during the pandemic, it was only right that I include her in some way. It hit me all of a sudden that I could use the name she once used for her own business, Agape Touch. My dad is also a great investor in the business. He is always down to help buy what I need to make things happen. He’s the primary reason I have most of my equipment. Lastly, my siblings, especially my sister, have been my greatest supporters. They promote, model, and purchase most of my designs. I’m grateful for all of their support and love.
