Meet Ja’Nera Mitchom | Curly Hair Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ja’Nera Mitchom and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ja’Nera, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
It was really a leap of faith. Owning a salon had been a dream of mine ever since I was a little girl. Becoming a curly hair specialist was really something that happened by chance. My original plan was to become a color specialist. However, I was presented an opportunity to be an assistant to a curly hair specialist and educator and the more I worked with curly hair, the more I fell in love with it. I realized how much I enjoyed empowering and educating people on how to embrace and care for their natural hair. That passion ultimately led to me opening Curls Unlimited and creating a space dedicated to helping people feel confident in their curls.

What should our readers know about your business?
I own a salon suite in Roswell called Curls Unlimited. I would eventually like to expand into something much bigger. As with all businesses, especially in salon ownership, everything has not been easy. Some weeks are great clientele wise and some are not so great. I feel as though I have created and continue to create a good social media and marketing presence for myself and my business and that’s how I continue to get new clientele. I feel as though I have created a safe and comfortable space for my clients and myself. It’s more than a salon, it’s a space dedicated to education, empowerment and embracing the beauty of natural curls. My brand is here to inspire confidence, provide expert guidance, and create a community where curls are celebrated.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have only been in the Atlanta area a few years, so I haven’t really explored much, lol. I would definitely take them to the Aquarium and maybe catch a Braves or Hawks game. Food wise, I love a good Pho or Ramen, so either I Love Pho or Jinya. For a good taco or margarita, I would go to bartaco. There’s a place in Buckhead that has a really good Birria Ramen, Talking Tacos. Also, a really cute selfie museum, Gurl Mobb. And of course, I have to take them to church at The dReam Center Church of Atlanta in Decatur.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely! I call her my curl mother, lol, Teresa Gary. I started off as her assistant in my first salon job and she has become so much more than my employer over the years. I always look to her for advice and encouragement and she and her late husband supported me in one of the hardest times of my life.
