We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamya Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamya, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued the creative career, because when I was young I always had an artistic passion. I was always shy and it was hard to talk about my feelings so I always expressed my emotions through paintings or my clothes. I love drawing, writing, and fashion so much that I knew one day I’m going to use these skills in the future.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
On February 2nd, 2020 I had an idea of starting a clothing brand. Unique Folks Only (UFO). I started with a cutting machine and a small iron but that never stopped me from doing what I love. Learning how to market my business was very difficult because I knew I was getting all the recognition other brands were. At first i felt embarrassed because I thought people didn’t like it. I noticed that it was okay and one day everyone going to see my brand because Unique Folks Only is not just clothes it’s more to itself. What do I want the world to know? Well, UFO is about mental health. Suicide rate has been increasing for years and the majority cause issues for that is bullying. No one should be bullied for how they look or what they wear or what they like. Unique Folks Only are for people who are unique in their own way and not ashamed of it. Changing the world to be more nice makes me happy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love going to barnes and nobles and the cafe. Reading books and drinking coffee with my friends would be nice. Going to a jazz club or a poetry slam would be beautiful. I love wings & tacos and my favourite drink is strawberry lemonade lol. If I go outside my comfort zone like a party because I am a college student I go with my closest friend because she never makes me feel uncomfortable.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to shoutout my family and my close friend, Dlo. Without him I wouldn’t have the confidence or opportunity to show my brand at my college fashion shows. He has a brand called AmoriAngels that’s has inspired me to really reach out and not be afraid to network. And of course my mom and auntie. They supported me since I had the idea and I will forever be appreciative for them.
