We had the good fortune of connecting with Farri C and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Farri, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, I never desired to work a 9-5. I always knew I was different & wanted to do something more & leave an impact, I just felt for a very long time that I wasn’t good at anything until my first year of college, while in class I thought to myself “this can not be my life” so one day after classes I went to Walmart & purchased a 100$ sewing machine, this was in 2018 & that’s when everything began.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
A very special person in my life once told me “you can become your own person, you don’t need anyone else”. & that person was Shekinah from “Love & HipHop” at the time I had only been in Atlanta for about a year if that & I was praying for my big break & she was apart of that story for me, she gave me a opportunity when no one else would, she seen something in me that I did not see in myself at that time.
Designing started in 2018 when I was 18 years old, at the time I did not know it was possible to become a fashion designer because growing up on the Eastside of Detroit, I’ve never witnessed it. We were taught, graduate high school, go to college & get a job however it was always something in my spirit that told me that I was meant for something bigger that was beyond my circumstances. So I purchased a 100$ sewing machine from Walmart & I let it sit for maybe two weeks before I actually decided to test it out, at the beginning I wasn’t very good at designing. I used to stay up all night watching YouTube videos & then I finally started to get the hang of it. I’ve never used patterns, I can literally visualize a custom garment within my mind & create it.
During this time I was making clothes for free, I would tell my homegirls to put on a outfit I made & take pictures in the garment, post on social media & tag me so that I could build my clientele & it worked.
Fast forward 2020, I decided to move to Atlanta during the ending of covid. My first time visiting Atlanta was an experience to say the least, the air even smelled different, that was my first time smelling money in the air, everybody was so nice, they spoke. Baby, I’m from the hood so this was refreshing. They were even supportive towards my business, so with that being said. My first time visiting was in May, Atlanta became home in November of that same year. When moving to Atlanta I thought everything would come to me easily however for those first 6 months I was broke!! No money, No customers, I went to Lenox mall almost everyday praying I could get 1 customer & it was a drought for 6 months, I wanted to give up on my business, I fell into a deep depression but I still kept the faith & after that 6 month mark I was receiving clients everyday from out of no where. During this time I wanted to work with celebrities, I’m like okay nah I live in Atlanta where everybody at so why haven’t I worked with anyone, my goal was to become a celebrity designer however it never happened until I left a person & situation alone. Once I removed the negativity from my life, my work was featured on Television, same month. That’s when I knew! God had literally taught me in that season that he will hold onto our Blessings if you have the wrong people around you, sometimes you have to let go of what no longer serves you to receive your Blessings & till this day, I have no issue with cutting ties to anyone or anything.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite place to stop at is Lenox Mall, of course! I love Atlantic station, Colony Square & Ponce City Market.
My favorite restaurant would have to be STK & D’Juan’s New Orleans Bistro, the food is amazing & they are Black owned!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom, Sam C. The most selfless person, woman, human I’ve ever met. Me as a person & my success truly is a reflection of everything she has instilled into my life.
So for that, I love my mama! Shout out to her!
