We had the good fortune of connecting with Eser Kucukseyhan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eser, what do you attribute your success to?
There are many factors that come together for our success. However, I would call out consistency at the top of the list. Consistency in bringing the highest quality of product and service to our customers, whether they purchase a single macaron or a large cake for a birthday party. For that reason, half of our sales come from repeat customers. Another important factor is our passion for continuously looking for new flavors, designs, offerings that will delight our customers. Everyday, we ask ourselves, what is the next big idea that we can work on. This keeps our brand fresh and relavent at all times.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a self-taught chef, who believe if you have real passion for something, nothing can stand in your way. French macarons have always been a passion for me. Every time I visited France, I would spend most of my time trying pastries, sitting at those beautiful bakeries, cafes. I would read books about Pierre Herme and Laduree, thinking about how I can start my own macaron business. Life is challenging with so many priorities. However, I believe when the right time comes, life will give you the signal to go ahead and start running after your passion. That’s how it happened as I found the right moment to be when I relocated to US with my husband. In any case, one thing I learned since then is with all the challenges you will face in this journey, you need to show resilience at all times. There will be times that you think it is not working, which is very normal. In those moments, I try to go back to my passion to refill my energy. I also learned that as you pursue your passion, you will start to recognize your talent in many areas that you have never used. I was always a good cook, especially with pastries but I never knew I had the talent in food photography or creating beautiful macaron cakes.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is absolutely a beautiful city. However, having been to so many places in US and Europe, I believe Georgia has the cutest small towns that you can eat, hang-out, enjoy a nice sunny afternoon. There is always something going on in these small towns, a festival, an event, etc. that you can spend your time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When we first started our business, back in 2017, as an immigrant. we had no connection with anyone. Our main social media channel, Instagram, had only 30 followers. One of our friends suggested us reaching out to the foodies in the city, having them taste our product. Out of many we tried to connect, only one got back to us, Lyuba Ellingson (@pastrysnobmsp) from Minneapolis. We met her at a small bakery where she tasted our macarons, took couple of photos. After tasting the macarons, she was so excited, telling us that these macarons were the BEST she ever had before. She listened to our story and decided to support us grow our audience locally. She posted the next day and we started receiving our followers double everyday. In couple of months, we were already 1000. Now, we have more than 40K followers not only from US but almost every country in the world. I believe Lyuba, who supported us in the early stages of our business, deserves a big thank you and recognition for sure.
