We had the good fortune of connecting with EJ King, MSMKT and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi EJ, what is the most important factor behind your success?
There are two primary reasons I believe I’ve had the level of success I’ve attained in my life.

The first, a relentless determination towards a clear goal. I have always pictured my ideal state — a place or position where I want to be and that would bring me a feeling of belonging and accomplishment.

Once that desire is clear, I immediately take practical steps toward achieving it. No amount of delay, rejection, or interference can stop me. Even if I modify the course, the objective remains and discipline and perseverance are the vehicle to that end point.

Secondly, and most importantly, I pray about every step forward. I’ve learned to hear the voice of Jesus and ask important questions about which path to take. My spirituality is not just a practice, or routine. I submit my desires to what I hear the Lord say. Generally, I hear His voice most clearly right before I fall asleep. He has moved boundaries and set up opportunities that no amount of diligence could accomplish. I’m unstoppable because He is.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I will always consider myself an artist first. My career began as a professional singer/actor/dancer. I have worked at the Broadway level with shows like Motown the Musical and others. I’ve collaborated with the greats and performed for hundreds and thousands of people. My experience on stage and on camera taught me how to tell compelling stories, face rejection, and think quickly.

I now also work in the corporate world and bring the lessons I’ve learned to make me a strategic, decisive, and compelling businessman. I will continue to perform professionally as a passion/hobby while pouring into my platform within corporate America.

Challenges make me even more creative. They test skills and dedication while separating you from the pack. My path has been incredibly difficult but as my mother told me, “Your success in life is the result of a series of sacrifices made at the right time.”

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to show people local areas in Atlanta. I have a great appreciation for culture and food! I am an adventurous eater and have tried everything from bugs to organs, but the point is, culture is key.

I know not everyone eats like me, but Buford Hwy is a gem for authentic foods from around the world. The best way to experience Buford Hwy food is to just drive down the street and pick a restaurant! Asian (Korean, Thai, Laotian, Indian, Phillipino, Taiwanese, Malayasian, Chinese, etc…) and Mexican food are my favorite cuisines to try there.

The outdoors is also a huge perk of living in a green city. Hiking trails or a trip to Lake Lanier are a must for working up an appetite and working off the calories so you can eat again!

Lastly, festival season is a beautiful time in ATL. I make it a point to hit as many cultural festivals as possible around September. The music, food, and art are an experience everyone should have.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many wonderful people I’d like to give a shout-out!

However, it is important to recognize those who have presented obstacles for me along the way. Although it may seem disparaging, people who have tried to slow my growth or been “haters” have served a vital role in the success I’ve had.

Each oppositional individual has taught me more about people, myself, and areas of opportunity to become a better person. They’ve sharpened my resilience and strengthened my resolve. I strive to never repeat the offenses I’ve faced against anyone else. Naysayers have made me a better leader and mentor. I want to treat people with respect and always encourage them to accomplish what they dream of accomplishing.

Also, my mom, sister, brother, friends, and positive leaders form a network of support I couldn’t have done any of this without.
