We had the good fortune of connecting with Don. oc and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Don., what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always been very artsy, when i was younger i used to write and draw a lot. My imagination has always been very vivid, i feel as though i live in my head a lot. My creative expression has taken different forms as time progressed, and i would say for the second half of my life till this point expressing myself through fashion has been the most dominant one. I loved drawing sketches for womenswear before i got into streetwear. Hip Hop and specifically the whole asap rocky and asap Mob wave really made me aware of the subculture of fashion happening in NYC. I was aware of the Glyn Browns, Ken Rebels, Justine Skye; younger me looked at them and wondered what it would be like to create a movement and completely change how the next generation looked at fashion. Its been a dream of mine to create my own brand and make beautiful pieces that would eventually revolutionize culture, thats my goal. I want to revolutionize, i want my work to be impactful. I will revolutionize and i will be impactful in the most grand and positive of ways. For me, Starting “Bizarre studios” felt natural – if anything it was a matter of when. My business is a reflection of me, i am the brand. From not just a capitalist lens but an artistic one, i am essentially selling myself. I’m selling my thoughts, my feelings, my insecurities, my dreams, my fears, my passion. Everything, i want as much as i feel and have felt to be on display, so that the next generation of creatives can feel it and and make others feel as well.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Right now i have two separate things i am working on, but i try to only create when it feels true. Bizarre studios is my clothing brand, and as of now this Fall/Winter 2021 release is geared toward streetwear with a feminine twist. Often time i feel as though streetwear items are aimed at men, while when streetwear tries to be feminine the quality is cheaper and badly made. This is because womenswear has so many fast fashion entities that water down the subculture especially when its on its way to become mainstream… I decided to release something that felt true to my energy, something that is reflective of my mind while creating it, as well as something younger me still looking to build her style … something that if she saw she would be absolutely excited to rock. I wanted this release to be a my mini take on feminine old school streetwear, so think about all of our fave streetwear brands but imagine the focus being more colorful, fun and girly. I am also working on FirstStopNY, i released two shoots for it where i sourced out the models and wrote the poems to go with it. FirstStopNY is a creative endeavor of mine, where i creative direct and try to depict stories and narratives that are not pushed or often overlooked when it comes to the black diaspora. FirstStopNY starts with New York stories, people, and creatives, eventually it will transcend to all of the black diaspora in an international space.
