We had the good fortune of connecting with Dereka Ne’ Shaye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dereka, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Outside it being an extra stream of income, when I was in the process of starting my business, I solely set out to cater to every girl or woman things I know they’d love that was trending or an eye catcher.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What Dereka Couture is today brings me so much joy. It first went from being an online business that offered everything from stationary products to sandals, to being an established boutique that offers modest chic apparel for girls and women of all ages. As I work the vision for the brand, to giving my customers what they want, along with some of the business being a reflection of me as well, I’m glad I decided to make the transition to offer clothing for those looking to cover up but look good while doing it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One thing I love about Atlanta, there’s so much to do here so if my best friend was coming into town our days would be eventful. I first would want us to go to a brunch place like The Chastain, where they have breakfast, pastries and coffee during the morning hours, then take a walk around the park that’s adjacent to the restaurant. From there I would love for us stop by a few must go museums in the city like the SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film, High Museum of Art, and National Center for Civil and Human Rights. Also, the weeks plans possibly will end off attending a perfume making session from a reel suggestion on Instagram or TikTok, and any other trending places that pop up along the search to find hidden gems in the city of Atlanta.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my mom. During the beginning of my middle school years, my mom, alongside my aunt, took a leap of faith and opened a salon. Watching my mom live out her dream, after passing the state board exam a second time round to working in salons to gain experience, it inspired me to one day to be an entrepreneur despite the obstacles that may with it along the way. Watching her apply faith and hard work, showed me I can succeed at anything I put my mind and hands to.
