We had the good fortune of connecting with Dereck Cyrus Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dereck, what do you want your legacy to be?
I want people to remember me as exceptional and as a man of principle. I strive my best to be a great human being and I take personal pride in making a great lasting impression on the people I professionally or personally encounter in life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
So professionally I have a background in health sciences and I work in invasive cardiology. I graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2017 and my path to where I am now was not an easy one. Ultimately I credit my success to patience and fighting against adversity. It’s important to handle adversity and think of it as an opportunity to shine; doing this is definitely easier said than done, but in the end it’s definitely worth the fight. I’m taking this same approach to my modeling and acting career. I’m thankful for Voyager Atl and shoutoutatlanta magazine for the opportunity to showcase my brand!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta has so many amazing spots to eat and hang out. I’m a bit boujee so here are my spots I always visit and would recommend. I’d recommend brunch at Le Petit Marche, a nice leisure walk at the beltline, lunch at Delbar Buckhead, and then dinner at Yebo Beach Hause, followed by a late night drive around the city!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give recognition to my dear friend and photographer Elvis Piedra. I met Elvis in 2019 and we have since developed a friendship and a wonderful working relationship. Elvis is a very accomplished photographer and artistic innovator in the Atlanta area and his attention to his craft and his vision is one of a kind.
