We had the good fortune of connecting with Deborah Gillison-Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deborah, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m inspired by the fact, I, along with my staff, have taken the Child and Adult Care Food Program and made an impact in the lives of children and adults by eradicating hunger, diminishing food insecurities, and increasing overall wellness within our local and national communities.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been in this business since 1996. I didn’t know much about the Child and Adult Care Food Program other than going home during the summer to visit my mother and taking the children to the elementary school in the neighborhood for free lunches. I didn’t think much about it at the time, but just knowing the schools were providing hot meals to children in the community during the summer was awesome and a much needed service. What sets me apart from others like myself is being able to step outside the box. I’m always striving and reaching higher ground. What can I do next to make life better for someone else who may be less fortunate. Some of my proudest moments was providing more than 300,000 meals to children during covid, partnering with Borden Milk to distribute gallons of free milk in the community, and what touched my heart even more was giving out food boxes during the holidays to families in need. Highest accomplishment was being nominated as a board member of National CACFP Association. (Did I say stepping outside the box?) How did I get to where I am? A lot of hard work and long hours. Many stumbling blocks along the way. But the climb made it all worthwhile, never giving in and never giving up. To overcome challenges, I have to have the faith of a mustard seed. Life is challenging as it is, you have to keep pushing forward. As far as lessons along the way, you have to be able to listen to others. (Which has not been easy) Having input in day to day processes, young minds can bring creative and innovative ideas. Having other talented minds propels me to push even further. The sky is the limit. Which is why the organization is successful. What I would want the world to know, you can achieve anything if you work hard for it what you want. Georgia Nutritional Services can stand on its own. Not only are our clients loyal to the organization, we are loyal to our clients. It’s all about the customer experience. Going above and beyond. As for my story, I wouldn’t have it done it any other way. What I have accomplished in this life time cannot be measured by the life I’ve lived, but by the service I have rendered to the families I’ve served.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m simple when it comes to relaxing for a weekend. But if a friend came to visit, the Georgia Aquarium or Botanical Garden would be a great place to start. Get something to eat at one of the restaurants nearby. I love going to the top of Stone Mountain and hanging out till the laser show and fireworks in the evening. 2 of my favorite restaurants are Capital Grill and Sun Dial Restaurant and Bar. The viewing deck is spectacular. I love jazz, maybe find a local jazz club and have drinks and conversation. And let’s not forget bowling
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shout out to the daycare homes, daycare centers, afterschool programs, and adult daycare facilities who have been loyal to our organization. They are truly the foundation Georgia Nutritional Services was and continue to build upon. Secondly, where would I be without the staff who see my vision and has enabled me to succeed and accomplish our goal eradicating hunger in our communities. They are definitely my pillar.
