We had the good fortune of connecting with Charity Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charity, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always had a love for hair since I was a toddler. I started doing my own hair in elementary school and started doing family in middle school. In high school I was doing hair for my friends, classmates, football players and even the teachers. After high school, I went to college pursue a job in the medical field but soon realized that it wasn’t for me. I always knew my love for hair was what I was meant to do so I went to cosmetology school to enhance my artistic/creative gift and I’m so happy that I did. Doing what I loved even as a child is so fulfilling.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I don’t just do hair to make a dollar. I do it to satify the client, to make the person sitting in chair feel good about themselves. I care about the hair and the person sitting in chair. I want them to experience something they’ve never experienced in anyone else’s chair. That’s what sets me apart from other stylist.

I got to where I am today with the love and support from my family, but where I am today is not where I plan on being in the near future. I’m thankful for how far I’ve come but I also know that God is going to take me even further. I know it won’t be easy but I’m ready for whatever God has in store for me and I know he has something great for me.

The most challenging obstacle for me is finding my lane. I’m so good at many things in this industry that I can’t just stick to one, but this industry is so broad and I love it. There’s room for everyone to succeed.

One lesson I’ve learned is that you can look at what others are doing or what they’ve achieved. Stay focused, stay prayed up and everything will fall into place at the right time.

I want the world to know that Charmed By Charity is just getting started. It will be a major brand in the future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We mosty definitely have to hit up BQE! Their food and the vibe is bomb! I recently visited The Black Hair Experience so that’s on my list as well…and definitely Atlantic Station for shopping, food and hanging out.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my family. My Huband, my 4 Sons, my Parents, my siblings and my cousins. They pushed me start and to keep going! I love them all dearly!
