We had the good fortune of connecting with Charity ‘Cake’ Hamidullah and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charity ‘Cake’, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
My career has been built off of risk. Becoming a female tattooer is not the easiest road but at the age of 16; I took that leap of faith and believed in myself when everyone else told me art wasn’t a career. From that point on it seemed like I truly enjoyed being uncomfortable and testing the waters. It became enjoyable to defy odds, learn lessons and grow. I wouldn’t be where I am now if I didn’t take that chance.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is a reflection not only of myself but the world around me. It is colorful, vibrant and full of stories of growth. It’s forever changing and drowned in love. I put my soul into all my pieces and am very intentional with what I create. My road to this point was not easy but I honestly don’t believe anyone’s is; I think that is what makes our stories beautiful and a connection point of us all. It’s what makes our ideals of success so much more rewarding. I arrived at my current point with a phenomenal foundation. My family was full of love, they were hardworking and always persevered. But, most importantly they taught me how to appreciate the now. This core pushed me to never give up and strive for what I believed in despite what it looked like. Along this journey , I learned how to be kind with myself, trust the process and always move forward. As my brand grows, it is my goal for the world to see a hardworking woman who never took no for answer. As they learn more about me; I want them to be inspired to go hard for themselves as they create their own way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First, I would take a walk with my friend in my neighborhood, Cabbagetown. We would look at the murals from Forward Warrior as we breathe in fresh air. Then we would stop at Thumbs Up Diner for some good southern breakfast severed right every time. During the week we would enjoy walks/ bike rides on the Beltline to get a glimpse of Atlanta. Take a cycling class at Vibe Ride Grant Park. Of course, I’ll take her to Krog Street Market and Ponce Market for good food and scenery. It’s a must we go to Little Five Points for shopping and we will spend our evenings hanging out on Edgewood at Mother’s, in East Atlanta Village on my favorite patio at The Midway Pub, our at Atlanta’s new Hookah Lounge , 404 Exotics. For food we are checking out Tasilli’s Raw Reality, La Fonda, 656 Sports Grill, WeSukiSuki, Bottle Rocket and Life Bistro. We would walk downtown , visit the aquarium and check out the High Museum. To sum it all, I would swing her by Iron Palm Tattoos to get a memory tattoo of Atlanta at the A’s favorite late night tattoo and piercing studio.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Everyone I every met on my journey deserves a shoutout but I can’t remember everyone’s name. I can recognize how they made me feel and helped to mold my life. To those I can remember , my family for my foundation , work ethic and love. I walk the way I do because of all of you. To New Jac , for inspiring me to strive for my best while learning so much about myself . To my art teacher Mrs.Maggio who told me that art is a career but more importantly a way of life. To Jeff of East Side Tattoo in Rochester, New York for giving me a chance to apprentice . inkaholicz, City of Ink, Black Owl Tattoos, Iron Palm Tattoos, the Atlanta artist community, This list could go on and on because everyday I am inspired by someone new.
