We had the good fortune of connecting with Catrina M. Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Catrina M., why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because I knew that it would be the best way for me to live a truly fulfilling life. Creativity knows no bounds or limitations. As a creative professional, I seek continuous growth and purpose-driven exploration which both are requirements for building a successful creative career. Creativity allows us to dive deep within our own minds, hearts and capabilities to manifest something the world had not yet seen or known before. The act of creation is divine in and of itself. By connecting to our own ability to create, we are aligned to our unique power to conceptualize and develop ideas and solutions that otherwise may never exist. Creativity is the ultimate form of problem solving being that it allows for infinite solutions to infinite problems. My favorite part about pursuing a creative career is using creativity to solve problems that affect not only the businesses we work with but the communities that they serve. My passion for my career has been driven by a love for community and a respect for all cultures. No other career path allows me the space and freedom to truly connect with, understand, and serve the needs of those within my community and around the world.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am the studio director and president of Studio 4258, a creative studio here in Atlanta, Georgia. We specialize in brand identity design, user experience and user interface design, and creative content development. Our work consists of brand development for companies including logo and identity design, packing design, and visual marketing strategy. We specialize in the visual design of digital products such as mobile and desktop applications and websites. We also develop creative content such as film, video, and advertising campaign development. What makes my company stand out is our commitment to producing creative and exceptionally professional quality work. In addition to having a bachelor of science in Graphic Communications and a minor in Business Administration, I also have over a decade of professional experience in printing, commercial advertising, and design. Prior to opening Studio 4258, I’ve been fortunate to have worked for several global advertising agencies producing creative work for prominent brands throughout the world. I’ve used my educational and professional experience to develop Studio 4258 to serve a diverse array of businesses both locally and globally. My path has not been easy but I have been able to overcome the many challenges I’ve faced by connecting with my purpose and remaining fueled by and aligned with my passions. What I have learned along the way is to accept failure and setbacks as a necessary part of growth and to never give up. What I want the world to know about me and Studio 4258 is that everything we do and create is done so with a meticulous eye for art and design and with a heart driven by purpose.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would want her to come during Atlanta’s festival season in the spring. We would go to the Dogwood Festival, Festival on Ponce, the Jazz Festival and any other festival that was coming to town. We would wake up for breakfast at Waffle House and grab pizza from Savage Pizza in Little Five Points after walking the strip. For dinner, I’d order her my favorite wings from The Wing Bar in East Atlanta Village, and we’d catch a drive-in movie at Starlight. I’d take her to an Atlanta Falcons game and an Atlanta United FC game at the stadium and make sure I took her to several spots off of Buford Highway to try…Mings BBQ, Food Terminal, and Co’m Vietnamese Grill just to name a few. I would also take her to the Dekalb Farmer’s market so we could buy our weight in fresh Georgia peaches and I could make her some of my favorite meals using the fresh herbs and produce we would find in the market. Ultimately, the best treat for my friends when they come to town is a home-cooked meal and my family’s famous dishes–jerk chicken wings, gumbo, smoked salmon, lasagna, and fresh baked brownies.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am fortunate to have a strong village and tribe who have supported and uplifted me throughout my life and career. My large and beautiful family are my village and they have been the ultimate source of encouragement and strength throughout my life. I would not be successful without the guidance of my parents, the friendship of my sisters, and the support of my husband. I have also been fortunate to have connected with many like-minded creative professionals throughout my career. Ad Queens, a community of ambitious women of color, are a major part of my tribe and I attribute much of my career evolution to the fact that I’ve been connected to such amazing and supportive individuals who uplift and believe in me. Finally, my mentors who have guided me to find my own voice and direction have been nothing short of a blessing to my life. Vann Graves, Executive Director at VCU Brandcenter and Anna Taylor, Sr. Art Director at BBDO Atlanta have been unwavering in their support of my career and well being. I am so grateful for their honest advice and conversation which they have offered graciously to me at the most critical points of my career. Many times, especially in the realms of advertising, marketing, and other creative-based industries, people can act as gate keepers shielding resources and insight from those of us who are seeking to advance our careers. It is rare to find individuals who are willing to not only give you honest advice but who are also willing to understand your aspirations and goals and will actively support and push you to achieve them.
