Meet Cal Boyd | Athletic Director and Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cal Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cal, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
If you want to go FAST go alone, but if you want to go FAR, go together. I have been in private school education for 34 years and I have been around team sports my entire life. I think it is so important for young people and older people for that matter to know how to work and be a part of a team. Your entire life, you are going to be a part of a team. whether it be a sales team, marketing team, administrative team, a lawyer’s team, whatever the industry, you will be a part of a team. Knowing how to work together is so important. Knowing what your role is and doing it well is key as well. Your role can change depending on which team you are on. Sometimes, you are the leader and sometimes you play a smaller role, but in the end, everyone is important to the success of the team. Learning how to work with others is a very important skill to know to be successful in life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As I said earlier, this is my 34 year in private school education. I have worked at 5 different private schools in the metro Atlanta area. I started at The Walker School, then moved to The Westminster School, the Pace Academy, then Greater Atlanta Christian and now currently at Mt Bethel Christian Academy.. What separates me from many others is the “WHY.” Many coaches want to win games to bring recognition to themselves but I want my teams to be successful for one reason and one reason only. SO WE CAN HAVE INFLUENCE IN THIS WORLD. I know that if I want people to listen to what we have to say, our teams have to be successful. If you are not good at your craft, then no one wants to hear what you have to say. BUT if your team is good, then people want to know what COACH BOYD has to say. We want to influence people from a Spiritual Standpoint. We are hoping to impact them in a positive way, but more importantly in a Spiritual way. For example, when we go to play in a tournament in a different state, I always tell my players, there are many people in this gym tonight who have never seen you play. How do you want them thinking about you after they watch. us play. What do you want them saying about you? We hope it is things like, ” Wow, I love the way that team plays., they play with joy.” We want the referees to say they enjoyed refereeing our games. etc. This is what separates us from the many other coaches.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Being in the Atlanta area,, I would definitely want to take him to a professional sporting event. Probably a Braves game. I would take him to the World of Coke since Coca Cola is one of the best companies in the world and it’s head quarters is here in Atlanta. I would take him to a show at the Fox Theatre. I would take them to play golf on one of the many nice courses in the area. As far as food, I would take them to a few places. Houstons, OK Cafe, and Mac’s Chop House on the Marietta Square.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My two older brothers, David Boyd and Scott Boyd. Both of them went into coaching and teaching and they inspired me to want to do the same thing. The Boyd Brothers – we have over 95 years of experience in education. Both my brothers have passed away., but both were very successful during their careers. They were 9 and 13 years older than me, so when i was deciding on what I wanted to do with my life, I definitely watched what they were doing and I liked the idea of impacting young people. Coaches impact more people in one year than many do in a life time.
