We had the good fortune of connecting with Beverly Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beverly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My path to business ownership was unconventional. Before launching, I’d been a group fitness instructor. People were aware of my connection with health and wellness, so they weren’t shocked when I decided to complete my certifications and start a business. It was a natural progression in my journey.
I wasn’t aware of branding, marketing strategy, or content creation. After I completed my certifications in personal training and coaching, I took a picture of my business card and posted it on social media. Within minutes, I had people contacting me about my services. My first client was my sorority sister. As my business grew, I learned more about messaging and content strategy. Even if you aren’t aware of the process, start where you are. Ask questions and keep growing.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m fortunate enough to wear two hats. Ten years ago, I became a Certified Health Coach, Personal Trainer, and Transformation Coach. I created The EPIC Health Coaching Academy. I’ve transformed my life by swapping detrimental habits for a realistic, sustainable lifestyle. This journey ignited a profound shift within me, leading to a passion for guiding others. Never did I anticipate so many women facing similar struggles to mine. Recognizing the need for support, I birthed my business from my journey of rebuilding post-divorce.
I also have a fantastic career with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Yes, NASA, the space people! It’s an exciting movement as we prepare for the Artemis launch. I serve as the center investment manager responsible for a multi-million dollar portfolio.
Program analyst by day and health coach by night. On the outside, you’d think that both worlds wouldn’t mesh. Being a part of the agency has taught me to dream and take the leap. Our work reminds me that there are seasons when you’ll have a vision only you can see. It may take years to materialize, but you should never abandon the vision.
My journey has been equal parts hard work, opportunity, and serendipity.
With my story, I want people to understand that our paths will look different. NASA taught me to believe in my vision, and Zumba Fitness taught me the importance of being myself and discovering my authenticity. Every person is different and brings their personality and style to their class.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The beauty of Huntsville is that it’s a college town. There’s always something to do between the University of Huntsville and my beloved alma mater, Alabama A&M University! If my friends decide to visit during the fall, a football game and tailgating are on the schedule, especially if they choose to attend during Homecoming. We’re hitting the day parties, games, and brunch. I want them to become fully immersed in the culture.
If it’s a quiet weekend, I can tell you that we’re shopping at BridgeStreet and enjoying a seafood boil at Pier 88 for dinner. That evening, we’ll catch a free concert in the part. The next day, we will hit brunch at my favorite spot, Catch 25.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There will never be a time when I don’t acknowledge the Queen Mother, my mom, Kayralee Evans, and, of course, my siblings, Jeniffer and Major.
Thank you to my sister circle of friends who encourage me and tell me when I’m doing the most.
