We had the good fortune of connecting with Anastasia Barnes Holmes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anastasia, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
With a substantial background in education and mental health, I have earned my credentials as Mrs. Anastasia Barnes Holmes, Psy.M., M.Ed. My professional journey extends beyond these fields; I am also a serial entrepreneur. Among my endeavors, I take particular pride in my involvement with two nonprofit organizations, which stand as significant highlights of my career. As the CEO of Welcome Holmes Foundation, Inc., our core mission is to support individuals with neurodivergent disorders and to enhance community understanding and inclusivity through education. We focus on creating programs that provide tailored support to neurodivergent individuals, fostering environments where they can thrive. Furthermore, we are dedicated to training civil service workers to improve their interactions with the neurodivergent community. Our aim is to facilitate more compassionate, effective engagements, thus ensuring safety and understanding in critical social interactions.

In my role as President of the FD Reese Foundation, Inc., our efforts are rooted in empowering communities through education and advocacy. We strive to uphold the legacy of Dr. Frederick D. Reese by promoting social justice and education reform. Our initiatives are designed to address systemic inequalities in education and to inspire young leaders to continue the work of civil rights and community development. By equipping them with knowledge and leadership skills, we contribute to building a more equitable society.

In both capacities, my commitment is to lead with compassion and determination, driving change and fostering environments where every individual is respected and valued.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As the CEO of Welcome Holmes Foundation, Inc., and President of the FD Reese Foundation, Inc., I am deeply committed to fostering inclusive communities and empowering the next generation through education and advocacy. What sets our organizations apart is our focus on the nuanced needs of neurodivergent individuals and our dedication to civil rights education, respectively. We are driven by a mission not just to serve but to transform—creating systemic changes that uphold dignity and equality for all.

Starting and scaling these foundations was far from easy. The journey has been filled with challenges, from securing funding and building the right team to navigating the complexities of effectively reaching and serving our communities. Overcoming these obstacles required perseverance, a deep passion for our mission, and an unwavering belief in the potential for change. Key to our success has been the ability to listen—truly listen—to the needs of those we serve and adapt our strategies accordingly.

One of the lessons I’ve learned is the importance of collaboration. No one achieves anything alone, and our successes are testament to the power of collective effort and shared vision. I’ve also learned that effective leadership involves humility and openness to learning—qualities that have been crucial in guiding our teams through uncertain times. Believing in yourself even when no one else does is a major challenge and great value to maintain. You must have tough skin to withstand the difficult times and have steadfast commitment to keep pushing for success!

I want the world to know that our brands are built on the pillars of compassion, innovation, and advocacy. At Welcome Holmes Foundation, Inc., we strive to enhance the lives of neurodivergent individuals by promoting understanding and practical support in every community interaction. This is being achieved through a plethora of initiatives. One opportunity includes that of technology driven developments with hopes of bridging a gap within society. There are more details to come! At the FD Reese Foundation, Inc., we honor the legacy of civil rights leadership by empowering young leaders and advocating for educational equity. Working towards writing a bill with local House of Representatives, turning the historical home of FD Reese into an interactive museum, and bringing innovative tours to educational institutions across the nation are just a few of the projects we have underway. We work to ensure that a rich history is preserved throughout not only the community but the nation, and the world as well.

Our story is one of resilience, commitment, and the transformative power of community-centered work. We are proud of what we have accomplished but even more excited about the future as we continue to break barriers and forge pathways for inclusivity and justice.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely, let’s dive in! The Shoutout series brilliantly underscores the profound truth that our achievements are often woven together with the support and inspiration we receive from those around us. I am immensely grateful to several pillars in my life who have been instrumental in shaping my journey.

Firstly, I want to recognize the incredible teams at Welcome Holmes Foundation, Inc., and the FD Reese Foundation, Inc. Their unwavering commitment and passionate advocacy are the engines behind our success. Their dedication not only fuels our foundation’s goals but also enriches the lives of those we serve.

I must also express my deepest gratitude to my family, especially my husband, Donald Holmes, Jr., whose support and love provide me with strength and encouragement every single day. He has been my rock, allowing me to pursue our shared dreams of making a meaningful impact.

The Cedar Grove and Dekalb County School District community of educators deserves a special mention. It was within these halls that I discovered my passion for learning—a passion that has evolved into my life’s work. The educators in these communities instilled in me the values of diligence and the pursuit of educational excellence.

I am also profoundly thankful for my mentors, Dr. Ibiyemi Dare and Lori Miller, whose guidance and wisdom have been pivotal in my development. They have not only taught me valuable lessons in leadership and resilience but have also shown me the power of compassionate mentorship.

Most importantly, I dedicate a significant portion of my gratitude to my children, who inspire me every day. They are the heart of my motivation and the reason I strive to create a more inclusive and understanding world. Their curiosity, joy, and resilience remind me of the impact our work has on future generations.

Each of these individuals and groups has played a crucial role in my story, and I am eternally grateful for their contributions. They deserve immense credit and recognition for their part in our collective achievements.
