We had the good fortune of connecting with Allison Person and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Allison, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe that the most important factor behind my success is consistency. I have always been a Hair Stylist that valued my client’s time and I always provided them with a clean and professional salon environment. Even when I opened my own Salon in 2010, I always provided certain amenities in my space and was always consistent in those amenities or upgraded them over time. Whether it was weekly fresh flowers in the salon or making sure we provided our clients favorite cookies. The clients appreciated those little perks and looked forward to them as well as receiving a high end hair service. I have always called myself a “Highly Paid Servant” and I believe that’s what kept me booked and busy for all these years.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was born an Artist, I used to sketch and paint as a child. I went to University of Memphis as an Art major but quickly got discouraged with the classes because I felt like I was being forced to create art that I didn’t enjoy. While trying to figure out my path, I was part of a modeling group. We needed hair and makeup and with us all being broke college students I decided to volunteer to do hair for shoots and fashion shows. I’ve always done my own my own hair since I was a young teen but I had never worked on another person. I found that I really enjoyed it. Long story short, after several semesters of trying to figure it out and about one year away from becoming a school teacher, I decided to drop out of college and go to Cosmetology School. I never picked up a chalk pencil again. I knew as soon as I started that Cosmetology would allow me to be the creative artist I was born to be. I have to say that I have never struggled in this business which tells me that God has something greater for me to achieve. I love that I can always learn new techniques and reinvent myself in the beauty business. I also love my clients. They are my family. I love taking care of them. They are the true reason for my success and I never forget that and I always treat them accordingly. I’ve worked with celebrities and travels all across the USA but its always a blessing to know you can always come home to your core group of clients that love you and support you. I’ve had a Beautiful run so far and Im very Grateful. I want my brand, AP Hair Care, to represent what’s amazing about the Beauty Industry. To show that we are here to serve and that we are passionate about the craft. I also like being a role model for new comers in the industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wow, that’s I tough question being that we are in a pandemic at the moment but if things were somewhat “normal” I would start off our week with a nice brunch. We are going to assume they came in on a Sunday. lol. There is a cute little restaurant in the Cooper Young area called The Beauty Shop that has a delicious brunch. On Monday, we would hang out at Shelby Farms Park to catch up and walk around the lake and later on that day go to Seasons 52 for their Happy Hour. Tuesday, we would go to Saddle Creek to do a little shopping. Wednesday through Friday would be workdays for me so we would hang out at the house after I got off work. Friday evening, we would head to the Edge District and pick up some Slim & Husky’s and then hang out at SonStorm Studio where my husband is a studio engineer. Saturday, we would find out where my friend’s husband, Yella P (a well knows harmonica player and blues artist), is gigging so we can enjoy some cocktails and live music.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shout out to Carl Person. He and his wife, Valerie, owned the first salon that I ever worked in. It was one of the top salons in our area at that time. I was blessed to have my first experience in a High End, Multicultural Salon so the Bar was set pretty high for me early in the game. I knew I couldn’t work anywhere else that didn’t meet these standards and that once I opened my own, I would have to be as great as their salon was or better. Carl is a perfectionist/Libra like myself and his eye for the tiny details made me excited to go to work everyday. I was taught early in my career that your clients pay attention to those details and they appreciate it. I had a strong customer service background already so seeing it applied in a field that I loved made it all the better,
