We had the good fortune of connecting with Akua; Micheline Obeng-Akrofi; Amisi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akua; Micheline, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
A common theme we keep hearing from friends and people we’ve met along the way is how hard it is to build relationships (both platonic and romantic) in our adult lives. The problem isn’t that there is a shortage of people to meet, but rather the spaces to intentionally and genuinely foster these relationships. We knew we could create spaces that welcomed and encouraged people to commune, collaborate and form new bonds. We started by hosting intimate events, such as themed game nights, where we’d invite our friends from various friend groups. What started out as a room filled with strangers slowly developed into a community and we began to grow and shape from there.

The Raw is a platform which serves to build community around shared commonalities in both professional and personal excellence. Our brand is simply re-imagined impact where we create spaces for like-minded, brilliant and Black leadership to prosper – with our time, with our talents and with each other.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We are an experience-based community. Both of us went to middle and high school in Georgia (#Northside) and then went away to college. We attended college at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Micheline) and Columbia University (Akua).

When we both decided to move back to Atlanta after college, we quickly noticed that there was a gap in the social experiences of young Black professionals. They either had a solid core group of friends or they were transitioning and struggling to find their footing amidst of all the other challenges of being a young adult.

The Raw was born as a solution. We set out to use our resources to create spaces for like-minded, Black professionals to meet, connect and grow together. What started as a YouTube channel to engage our community in thought-provoking conversations (all while offering new information and perspective) has grown into a massive community of brilliant Black professionals that are actively changing the landscape of the world as we know it.

The Raw is not your typical social experience. Each event and concept is curated with one goal in mind: Building community, building wealth and building legacy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
All you ever need is a weekend in Atlanta and you’ll be ready to move!

Friday is when the weekend officially begins. We’d start off the day at a cute cafe – Le Bon Nosh is perfect for the feel and vibe. Then we’d follow that up with a nice massage/spa day at the Now Massage. Friday Nights are known for the game nights we host and a fun way of unwinding after the week.

Saturday could go many different ways but we are going to take a quick trip to North Georgia and visit Chateau Elan– this gorgeous winery is equipped with everything you need for a day trip getaway. There are multiple restaurants, a spa and of course, wine wine wine!

Sundays are for two things: church and brunch! Some of our favorite brunch spots are Breakfast at Barney’s, Roc South, and Toast on Lenox! We also attend The Faith Center in Tucker, Ga.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people who have played a role in our success and where we are now. There is no way to pinpoint one person so rather we want to thank everyone that has contributed to our faith in this journey. We are truly able to create these beautiful and unique experiences because of that people that inspire, encourage and uplift us.
