We had the good fortune of connecting with Acacia Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Acacia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I thought long and hard for many years on what direction I wanted for my life. I initially thought I wanted a successful career in the financial services industry. I realized I wasn’t as fulfilled as I liked. Even after various attempts at a successful career in this field. I spent years pondering and trying to soul search. I wanted to figure out what truly made me happy. I knew that I wanted to be able to have more flexibility in my life.
I wanted to change all of my hectic mornings. I wanted to reduce mornings filled with rushing to sit in traffic. I dreamed of a life where my lunch and break times, were not constantly being managed by someone else. I knew that I needed to make a change when I had my first child. I wanted to be present during her childhood. I did not want to miss milestones and memories. I desired a better work life balance.
After a lot of thought, I recognized that I always enjoyed creating. I loved to make anything! I tried to figure out a way for me to turn my hobby, into an income producing business. I came up with the idea of showcasing different craft ideas through print and video tutorials online. This business gives me the ability to work remotely and to manage my own schedule. I enjoy being able to push my creativity. I’m very happy that I have successfully created a public online catalogue of my work.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m most excited about the future and improving my skills with time. I’m “crafting for the streets” and creating a space online that’s a positive refuge from the streets. I try my best to create inspiring craft tutorials that you would love to have. I try to produce affordable items that are typically expensive. I typically do my own thing. My vision is 100 percent executed by me. I’m happy that my brand is a true representation of me and my style.
I got to this space with an idea, that I finally decided to initiate. This journey has never been easy. It has been a mixed bag of emotions from the start. I am mainly an introvert trying to thrive and succeed in an extrovert space. I still overcome challenges on a daily basis. I tackle many roles within my business. Taking on many roles can be a lot for one person to navigate. I am working on managing my time better. I have definitely improved my efficiency with certain tasks. Improving my efficiency has helped me try to avoid burnout.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is filled with so many things to do. I’m a big fan of any place with a rooftop. There are a lot of rooftop places to choose from. Any place with a rooftop would definitely be added to the itinerary. I always like to explore and visit new places. I would more than likely, try out some new places that I haven’t been before on the visit. But, I still have some go to locations.
I would start the day off with brunch in College Park off of Main St. This street is filled with a line of restaurants with a variety of brunch options. Depending on the season, we would visit East Point for “Wednesday Wine Down at the Point”. We would also make a stop at Chicago in Smyrna for some pizza and drinks. I also like to visit, Colony Square on Sundays for their live DJ and food hall. It has a nice indoor/outdoor vibe. The Atlanta Beltline would also be included. It’s a casual place to walk along and also grab some food. For night life, we would dress up and go to El Malo which has a great grown and moody vibe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give credit and recognition to my immediate family. My childhood foundation was definitely a needed catalyst for who I am today. I am grateful for the work ethic, knowledge, wisdom, and faith that was instilled in me at an early age. Each one of my family members have provided their own unique effect on my life. It’s kind of like each family member has provided their own ingredient to compose the recipe that is me.
I now understand, that I needed all of the tough love I experienced in my early years. What my family required from me growing up, has made me the strong person I am today. I am grateful for the early life lessons. They didn’t make sense to me until I got older. My experiences within my family have helped me navigate this direction in my life.
