We had the good fortune of connecting with Abigail Heather and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abigail, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always been a creative person, and growing up in a family surrounded by art and music really shaped me. My mom is an artist and my dad is a musician, so creativity was always part of my world. In college, while studying music education, I continued developing my photography skills on the side, and it quickly became something I was deeply passionate about. What started as a creative outlet has grown into a business where I get to capture meaningful, beautiful moments for others. Photography allows me to combine my love for artistry with connecting to people, and it’s been such a fulfilling path alongside teaching.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business really started back in high school. My younger brother played baseball and football, and when I was 16, my parents bought me my first camera and asked me to take photos at his games. What began as capturing memories for him quickly grew into photographing his entire team, and that’s when I fell in love with photography.

When I went to college, I stepped away from it for a bit, but soon realized I needed a creative outlet. Around the same time, I got engaged and was surrounded by everything weddings, which reignited my passion. I started asking couples I knew to let me practice with them and reached out to local photographers to shadow and learn. That eventually led to second shooting, then booking my own weddings, and ultimately building the business I have today.

What I love most is being able to grow alongside my clients—capturing their love stories from couples’ sessions, to surprise engagements, to weddings, and later, maternity and family portraits. It’s such an honor to document those chapters and create something they can look back on for years to come.

It definitely wasn’t easy—I invested countless hours into free sessions, studying, and constantly working to improve my skills. But looking back, I’m proud of the work I’ve put in and even more proud of the stories I get to tell through my images. For me, photography is about more than just pictures—it’s about connection, storytelling, and preserving the moments that truly matter.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting Atlanta for a week, I’d definitely plan a mix of arts, culture, and great food. I love the creative side of the city, so we’d spend time in Midtown, starting with a visit to the Fox Theatre for a show and the Woodruff Arts Center to soak up some art.

Throughout the week, I’d make sure we walked the BeltLine and explored the murals, shops, and little cafes along the way. We’d spend a morning at Ponce City Market, wandering through the food hall and maybe heading up to Skyline Park for some rooftop views.

For something unique, I’d take them to the Atlanta Botanical Garden—it’s so peaceful and beautiful, especially at sunset. And of course, we’d have to squeeze in brunch at a local favorite (because Atlanta brunch culture is serious!) and even check out a brewery or two.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Amber Brannen Photography: My mentor and teacher. I owe my entire business to her! She has helped me in every step of the way.

Koury Farms Weddings and Events: Glynis and Scott have really helped me learn the wedding industry and have always been an open ear to questions and have always offered me a helping hand along the way.
