We had the good fortune of connecting with Manessa Lazare and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Manessa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Always betting on myself to win! As I recall back to my childhood, my Haitian parents always instilled, more like drilled, into me and my siblings to shoot for the stars, to dream big. I quickly grew to learn that, my dreams went far beyond what my parents envisioned for me, which was to be a college-educated and a successful career woman. They never had a preference of what I should do as long as I made them proud. But there was still a void; with the help of therapy and self-help books specifically one titled Trust: Mastering the Four Essential Trusts: Trust in Self, Trust in God, Trust in Others, Trust in Life by Iyanla Vanzant, I learned that I am the master of my destiny. I received my Masters in Business Administration: Human Resources in 2014 from Nova Southeastern University for my parents and I bet on myself and enrolled in Victoria Duke’s Academy of Glam and went on to become a certified makeup artist in 2016 and launched Glamour By Ness LLC shortly thereafter.

When I think about taking risks, it looks and feels like everything falls apart, however, there is beauty in the mess, in actuality, everything is falling into place as it should; the experience, the place, the client(s), etc. Taking risks is trusting that no matter the outcome it is a win or a lesson. It’s quite ironic that the very thing that seems impossible to accomplish or things we put off doing is the very thing that will propel us forward to the life we envision. Being a risk-taker has challenged me to think outside of the box, it’s allowed me to become comfortable in being uncomfortable, to be strategic; it is in this moment I feel the most creative, inspired to continue to fail forward into my abundance.

Life is full of experiences; some good, some bad. It is all about perspective and anyone, including myself, who’s ever taken a risk has always had a return on their investment. My decision to be in a state of consistent growth allows my wins to be that much sweeter. Makeup is happiness! Makeup is creative! Makeup is fun! I love bringing happiness, creativity, and fun to my clients; it is always a guaranteed winning situation.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
By day I work in Corporate America as a Human Resources Business Partner working in the Media Industry. It is a task to find the balance between corporate life and the life of an artist. It is a life that I accept because I am manifesting the luxurious life of Ness. I am blessed and able to support and work with a group of leaders who work hard to provide the best care for their clients while serving my Glamour By Ness LLC clientele.

There are a plethora of opportunities to get discouraged because, to be frank, there aren’t enough hours in the day to complete everything: exercising, eating healthy, family life can be overwhelming at times, especially when you have competing priorities while trying to build my beauty empire. I find that allowing myself grace, delegating tasks (ex. hiring a brand manager), and resting allows me to complete [all] tasks in a timely fashion. My planner is my bible, I keep it filled with all of my deadlines.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom, who is my world. Marie M. Lazare has been a beacon of light; not only for food and shelter but for encouragement. My mom may not have agreed with a lot of the risks I took, but she always supported me, she always had my back no matter what, and she was always there to help, even if it meant her listening to me sob uncontrollably on the phone. I love her to life.

My sisters, Melissa Lazare (my twin) and Johanne Lazare (my little sister); are my rock. The women in my life have always been constant. Words are not enough to express my gratitude.

Ms. Polly, my third-grade teacher from North Miami Elementary School. Ms. Polly saw something in me that took me quite some time to see myself. I’ll never forget her scheduling a parent-teacher conference (I thought I was in trouble), to inform my mom that I needed to be in accelerated classes.
