We had the good fortune of connecting with Tristan Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tristan, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was raised in Charles Town, WV. It’s a growing town about an hour from D.C. Life was never too difficult. Just kind of run-of-the-mill. My family thankfully fostered my interests, so by now I figure why try to go after a career in the arts that I could start myself. It seems easier to follow your dreams when you have good support, for which I am thankful

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m musician and songwriter. Songwriter, first and foremost. The feeling of transferring an emotion from your brain to a piece of audio; suffice to say there is nothing more thrilling than that to me. I’ve been doing this since I was eleven, so by now I find it a relatively simple process to make something I like. I’ve had friends and fellow musicians who do not find it as easy, whether due to a lack of confidence or simple inexperience. I wanted help people along the way to expressing themselves in a way they could find fulfilling. So I started a YouTube series, inspired by another YouTuber, PraxiPlays, showing roughly how I would craft a song in the styles of various artists. People seemed to like it and be appreciative of these videos. Some reach out to me if they need more help and I try to when I can. It’s just fun and leaves me feeling warm that I could help people feel the way I do about music.
The only challenges I’ve faced is trying to pretend I’m all these different artists and making musical decisions I think they’d make. That’s part of the fun though. Staying motivated is also tough, especially while working a regular job on top of it. But what I’m doing with music is fun to me, so I don’t find it too difficult to keep content flowing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d probably spend a large portion of time at my place playing Halo, in all honesty. Probably would order a lot of food for delivery. If we’re feeling feisty maybe I’d show them my walking route around my neighborhood. We don’t really need much else to enjoy our time with each other.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Farshad, for helping take the first steps in finding my passion. My parents, for driving me to gigs and encouraging me to keep going.
Bailey, for being the first set of ears to hear whatever I’m working on.
