We had the good fortune of connecting with Brittany Bernier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittany, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I’m inspired by mother earth and connecting to nature. My lifestyle is based on clean living and focused on natural elements/ products that not only benefit my body, but also my home and my spirit.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
With my candle business, I didn’t want to be just some regular candle brand that makes great scents, I made it a goal for my brand so have purpose by connecting with nature and moods. Each scent is inspires either by season or music so when my customers shop with me they’re aware that each scent selection has a purpose to set just the right mood for their home. It’s challenging because there’s so much competition, so what sets me apart from the rest is being able to translate those moods through visuals of different spaces, so shopping is almost easy once you understand the inspiration for each scent. As for fashion, I’m a unisex fashion designer so I design clothing for all beings. Gender to me is just a label that limits my creativity, so designing unisex clothing allows me to create without guidelines such as color, silhouette, size, etc. I’m able to create freely and vocalize my sketches into beautiful garments. It’s been challenge to connect with most recent trends in fashion but I feel like in order to stand out you should connect in your own way and lead by your own example. I feel like for both of my brands I’ve had my share of up’s & downs but my biggest lesson is to simply try and learn from my actions. It shows me how I can do things differently and grow from what I’ve already done. It’s a win win in the end.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Definitely little 5 points. It’s an artist paradise for a ton of unique shops, and inspiration. Night life is great in edgewood. The Vortex in little 5 points is always packed but the wait is worth it. Next would be westside provisions only because it’s a little more upscale but still a must see spot in ATL. My favorite restaurant there is definitely yeah burger, they have a ton of burger options and all at a great price.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would have to say my professor/ mentor Julia. When I was in college back in 2017 finishing up my senior collection she inspired me to think larger when it came to fashion design and to always test the limits with my creativity, which has inspired me to create other things by understanding my connection through nature and gearing my lifestyle to represent that connection. Ultimately it was an experience that helped me learn a lot of little things about myself. It started with fashion and translated to home goods which is why I now have a candle brand that stands behind the essence of burning clean/ natural candles.
