We had the good fortune of connecting with Christopher King and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Christopher, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk was and is at the top of my food chain. With out risk their is no opportunity to fail or succeed. I’ve learned so much over the last twenty years of my life just by taking risks and winning and losing. And I value my losses and very wins as they have helped me to become the man and business man I am today. It helped me to develop a level of patience and persistence. Growing a unstoppable level of ability to never give up. Walking away from the corporate world to stand alone was a big risk. To be able to develop a lifestyle and practice of hustle to, yes I said hustle, survive. If you call your self a entrepreneur and you don’t have no hustle, well then how will you survive. It was a risk signing my name on the dotted line to start a business, it was risk to obligating myself to develop the community, it was a risk putting trust in the possibility to make an income of the service I provide to people. The only person that you new had me was god. It was in his hands. But with all that faith, I knew I had to do one thing and one thing only. “Work” and I mean hustling work, day in day out, long nights, longer days, finding ways to cut costs and make profits, finding ways to make profits with no expense. It was all a risk, but my favorite word is “perseverance”, it saw me through everything. My undying ability to never give up in the face of many adversities. I new what was for me will be for me. Now along they way you have to be always humble to the fact that nobody owes you anything nor is obligated to hire your service. You have to negotiate, sometimes barter, until you can build a platform of success that it demands payment. When they see it they know it costs. It like like it has a price tag in it not a let me Hakka at you moment. You know when a person comes and says “aye cuz let me hala at you for second” intro. You know what’s about to be asked lol. So we must always stay humble in our service to others as we build our brands. As it’s all a risk. Everyday.
What should our readers know about your business?
Coming from a youthful foundation around drugs and crime that resulted in a judge ordered enlistment in the United States Marine Corps in 2002 while living in Savannah, Ga., i serves from 2002-2007I found myself jumping from career to career after a honorable service of two terms. In 2013 after relocating from Georgia to Florida I found that a change was needed. Rebranding myself was needed. Redeveloping and figuring out who Christopher King is and will be going forward. In the development of my brand I created wooden bow ties l, a cigar line, and designing men’s dinner jackets creating the brand of the Tampa Gentleman. While building that brand I was hosting fashion shows and fashion weeks globally. Being the grandson of BB King has some perks i guess. After a while, I found myself wanting to give back and seeking more fulfillment. My manager at the time Tina Cox helped me come up the concept of The Gentlemens Course with knowledge I already new as a gentlemen. Teaching kids etiquette human rights and human trafficking prevention. Today formed The Gentlemens Course Inc.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For tampa. I’m a Foodie so we will be enjoying the Exotic Brunches of the Rusty Pelican or Jackson’s Bistro, then maybe sliding through Bazaar inside Nordstrom then walk on the riverwalk till we cross Channel side for the Food Truck Street and sample some of the Loaded tacos and street corn.
There is so much from
Hookah lounges, cigar bars, speak easies and martini bars. Drive in movie theaters, cultural restaurants and beach walking paths. Pick up a football game or even a hockey game or baseball game. Tampa truly is a city that doesn’t sleep. Tampa is home to the NFL, NHL, MLS, WWE, MLB, and so much more. Truly home of the sunshine. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God deserves all the credit first. My family is next in line as they bare the burden of my absences and joys of my blessings. They cry with me and celebrate with me. Then my staff and supporters. Who have helped me build my businesses and brand. Nothing is possible with all the donors that contributed financially, volunteering or in giving their products.
