We had the good fortune of connecting with Abasi Bassey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Abasi, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The biggest lesson learned from my business/ career is that hard work and consistency are just as important (and in some cases more important) than pure talent. Additionally, as counter-intuitive as it sounds, you should embrace failure. One of my favorite entrepreneurs, Gary V, talks a lot about becoming comfortable with failure, because then there’s no self-doubt holding you back from getting back up and trying again. With that mentality, it’s only a matter of time because you achieve success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I wouldn’t say this is my biggest accomplishment but it was definitely one of my favorites. When I was an Engineer with BMW, I was in a team that developed a database and created a new feature on BMW vehicles that had never been done before by any other car company. I loved the process of seeing a half-feasible thought actually come to fruition and become something that will be used for years to come. While it’s not something mega that I would gain a great deal of recognition for, knowing that I had a hand in a technology that will live on is quite satisfying to me. While I love engineering, I also love to diversify what I do, in order to not get comfortable. So, I dabble in music production where I had my music in an iphone/ android game that unfortunately got discontinued due to some legal issues they had. I also enjoy photography/ videography and have gotten the chance to work with some really interesting people. Ultimately, I just like to keep looking for the next thing to create, that can allow me to show what I’m capable of.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
While I don’t mind the fancy, expensive spots in the middle of the city, I definitely like “less fancy” restaurants that still have really good food. Some of my top places are Anh’s Kitchen where they serve some of the best Vietnamese food I’ve had, alongside another restaurant by the name of Be Banh Mi. I like Fox Bros BBQ occasionally for some hearty southern food, and South City Kitchen because they have some of the best brunch (especially after a drink-filled Saturday night). If I had my friends visiting the city, I’d have to take them to those restaurants. Additionally, I’d show them all the popular places (GA Aquarium, Coca Cola Center etc) because funnily enough I’ve not been to most of them. The fact that I live here makes me put all of that on the back burner and potentially take it for granted, but it would be fun to experience it for the first time with them.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my parents and siblings. As the youngest child, I’ve always had a support system of knowledgeable people with insightful advice. While just about everyone of us have extremely different career fields, I have gotten a great deal of inspiration from my family which I have been able to parlay that into my specific career field, which involves Engineering and Business/ Entrepreneurship. A lot of opportunities I have taken advantage of, came from brainstorms, suggestions, tips from those close to me and I will always be appreciative of that.
