We had the good fortune of connecting with Malika Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malika, how do you think about risk?
That one risk you’re scared of might change your whole life, while motivating the hood at the same time. Either you take that risk or stay in the same place,I’m taking risks, sacrificing daily. Do it scared. Do it broke. I took a risk when I launched every business, you never know how fast you’re gonna sell out ,you just have to plan & trust God.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m 21, & started working on my first business at 16. I was launching businesses before it was cool so in a way I gave a lot of people hope especially when they were around me daily & saw the grind. I’m a first generation college student so I have a lot to prove, anything is possible. All my businesses are ran by me, I learned everything from google I didn’t have mentors in business or people I could ask about the legal aspects. I taught myself then wrote ebooks to help those that were like me. As far as excited, I’m about to graduate college in a few months so that’s where all my attention is right now. Getting to where I am professionally as well as mentally was a challenge but I wouldn’t trade my struggles because they molded me. If I could tell a beginner anything,it would be choose you then choose you again. Be in peace not pieces. Choose time for yourself or your body will shut down & choose them. Don’t attach your happiness to your current circumstances nor your relationship status. We are most focused when we have no distractions, Once you start giving people too much they forget it’s a privilege & that’s in all aspects. I overcome my obstacles by praying & writing in my journal. I make sure I date every entry simply because God can make the impossible, possible within seconds. Along the way, I’ve learned whatever you water grows. So take care of yourself + your businesses if you’re trying to succeed. Procrastination is normal but it’s not your best friend. I want the world to know that I’m here, I hear you & I’m willing to help.My scholarship foundation is also launching this year. So many of our kids aren’t going off to college due to lack of funds and knowledge pertaining to the real world. It’s easier said than done, my goal is to transform lives through scholarship, fellowship and education. Some have the drive, just lack support.. Some have the support while lacking the proper funds.. Everyone isn’t a straight A student.. Everyone doesn’t have rich parents. Some just need a little push. I know the struggle. It’s my pleasure to give back and pour into my community. If I don’t know, I’ll find out for you.I’ve always been determined and knew what I wanted but your current circumstances can almost make it feel impossible. Struggle builds character. I proved society wrong & birthed four businesses.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love seafood, so Juicy Crab is a must. If I’m feeling Tacos, I’ll near Tin Lizzy’s plus their drinks are fire.If I need quiet time & it’s nice outside, Piedmont park is my go to for a picnic, Acai Bowl from Playa Bowls + hookah.I know Target is everywhere but baby I live for the vibes. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Thanks to God, my mom, god dad & my tribe. I’m also thankful for my girls #THELINKUP. All my sisters are dope and showing up for themselves and others in amazing ways.Though I’m the oldest , shoutout to my siblings they don’t realize I need them way more than they’ll ever need me. They give me a reason and for that I’ll never stop.
