We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Keita Joy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Keita, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As the CEO of Success Uncensored® Coaching, I envisioned a coaching and consulting business that would maximize the greatest potential in others, activate audacious hope, and cultivate a community of leaders committed to purpose, strategy, and growth. Business is deeper than profit. Profit is a byproduct of a mission minded individual obsessed with their WHY and leaving this world better than they found it. As an only child, growing up in a lower-middle class neighborhood in Miami, Fl, I experienced the trauma of losing my father suddenly to a brain aneurysm, a mother who suffered with the disease of a drug and alcohol addition, and felt the sting of loneliness with no other sibling to lean on for support. It was in those dark moments that I realized life is uncertain and that having a leader in the form of a mentor, therapist/life coach, or pastor is vital for a victorious life. I was determined to give others what I needed which is solution based thinking, a growth mindset, and a new perspective to positive living. And to start a business you have to have the confidence to say “I CAN FILL THAT NEED!”

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
When I initially started my business I was a middle School Counselor with a Marketing degree from Florida State University, a Masters in Counseling, and my EdD in Organizational Leadership. I knew that the gifts that God gave me were growing exponentially and were meant to reach people globally. Fear quickly set in and I questioned if I was good enough to start my own business. With sweaty palms and a racing heart I resigned from my comfortable career to follow the next level of my purpose pathway. It was frightening! I didn’t have many family members that were entrepreneurs and my husband and I did not have the capital to build a start up. Tough was an understatement. Initially we struggled to pay our mortgage and I began to feel the weight of guilt as I perceived my family as “struggling” as my fault for dreaming. What kept me going was my faith and confidence in my abilities and talents. I knew I had the sauce that saves lives and saves corporations, I just needed the systems and strategy to build my future. It was my resolve to adhere to my Success formula which is the foundation for my coaching programs and is the anchor of our business model. Ready to know what it is? Take out pen and a pad and write this down because it’s mmm mmmm good… Do YOU + Do it Well + Do it Consistently = Success Do YOU means just that! Understanding your identity opens the gateway to clarity, and clarity leads to purpose, and purpose leads to strategy. I realized I was the most fulfilled and the most paid when I would show up fully in any space using my talents, skills, knowledge, personality, strengths, and belief system. Do it Well- Once you are clear on your personal and professional pathway, it’s time to execute in excellence. As I researched human behavior through qualitative studies I found that people tend to perform well for other’s approval, which means your best is contingent upon who you meet and what the offer presented. Success Uncensored® believes that you are the CEO of your life and that you have the divine power to change a thought, therefore you can change your life. Excellence rather is a reflection of self love and self concept and less about people pleasing or “performing” for shirt periods of time for an end result. What if excellence is just WHO YOU ARE? If your best is a lifestyle, then receiving opportunities and increasing your chances of success will become your lifestyle as well. Your mental health is refreshed and revitalized every time you show up doing tasks well as it boosts your confidence and is attached to your purpose rather than a purpose. Do it Consistently- In the own life I’ve witnessed heartbreak and devastation. I’ve battled with depression and my own dark moments of doubt and despair and it was resiliency, faith, and a strategic plan to assess potential barriers to entry and pans in place to overcome those obstacles when they arise. That is how you can continue in your career and in your community consistently producing great work! Listen, these three ingredients are the blueprint for successful living…success uncensored living! I’m sure you notices that there are a gazillion coaches around town so how does my company continue to land partnerships with big corporations and influencers such as the NFLPA, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), Ted Talk, NBA athletes, Facebook, and more? ENERGY!!! My intentions are pure, my JOY is real and infectious, and my love for life is magnetizing. Corporations to college students immediately feel safe to share their truth and trust that my guidance is research based and full of resources and accountability.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh my goodness I’m such a momma when I’m not in business mode so most of my weekends are on soccer and football filed, basketball courts, and pool sides, but when I do get dolled up or need a day of refreshing here are some things I’d do in my city: Boss women work hard so a day at the Orlando Ritz Carlton for a spa treatment, lunch, and a little bubbly would hit the spot! I love seafood and after the spa a dinner at Big Fin would follow for oysters, grouper, and specialty drinks. I love to dance so with full bellies we would stop by the Winter Park, Fl historic boat ride that you can rent for small private parties (COVID safe event) and roll on over downtown to shake and groove at a local spot. Of course, we’re cute, face to beat, and laughter in our bellies. That’s a must. 🙂 Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. A woman is only as great as her tribe and my tribe is strong! My husband is beyond supportive stepping in consistently to make sure our 7 and 9 year old children are safe and secure while I’m traveling to coach and speak even if it’s a virtual transport. 😉 I am humbled to have powerful and pure friendships like my book publisher and girl boss Sierra Rainge and attorney boss Lazondra Randolph.
