We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Carla Copeland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Carla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind me starting my own business was seeing the breakdown in Instructional strategies, professional development sessions for teachers, compliance, the lack of compassion and resources for students with disabilities declining. I knew that I had to do something that would shift the mindset and the trajectory.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an innovative, out-of-the box thinker, life long learner, and passionate about special education. I have worked in all areas of special education. I am the first special education consulting firm in my area and I am a minority business woman! It has not been easy breaking in to the districts to provide this services. However, it is much needed. DeCASA also has expanded its services to include a Wellness component with an Escape room, DeCASA Educators Escape Room. I have an additional team of 4 professionals on this Escape Team and we provide an amazing virtual and face to face Escape Experience!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh my! I am a Georgia Peach, Atlanta born and raised….”Grady Baby”…lol… I would definitely spend a lot of time in the city! We would visit the Georgia Aquarium, Ruth’s Chris, Ponce City Market, Atlantic Station, Poor Calvin’s, Zoo Atlanta, Ray’s in the City, Atlanta Breakfast Club, Phipps Plaza, Slutty Vegan Atl, Bone’s, The Capital Grille, tour the AU Center, the King Center, Carter Center, Spa, and sleep…I don’t do clubs!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First, off I would like to thank my Creator! I am grateful to do what I do because He gives me life! Second, my family, my sons and my granddaughter give my the drive to keep striving! My professional mentors, Jane Cantrell and Dr. Sara Bealing were very instrumental in driving my passion for special education.
