We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Cartwright and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Monique, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
As a plus-size model, my impact on the community of all ages is huge for me. Body image and self-acceptance is of major importance for me. I reflect back on my own lifelong struggles with self-love and body image and how it depressed me for years. If I can reach just one young woman or man and assist them to learn to love and accept who they are no matter what – I have done my job. In these days of social media, its easy to get distracted and caught up in a cookie-cutter body image that is not realistic. My confidence comes from within and not from any computer program and I want to teach the younger generations and even some of my own that we have young ones watching us and we have to teach them to do better and love the skin they are in!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
By day, I am a Manager in the Healthcare industry. I have been in healthcare for over 24 years. It was not easy at all, learning to juggle being a mother, wife, manager, and then to top it off a model. It takes a whole village over here that’s for sure to keep my world going. My support system is great and thanks to all of them. You must take your time and do your homework first, nothing happens overnight… I am at the 5-year mark in my modeling career and I am still praying for certain opportunities to come my way. It took a while for me to learn that I AM my own brand ..me… with all the self doubt it never clicked until about a year ago. Keep going and never stop and build up that brand!!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
