Meet Kay Smith Cobbs | Relationship & Dating Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Smith Cobbs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kay, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a therapist working toward clinical licensure, I have spent many years working in social work and supporting individuals and families through a variety of life challenges. Throughout my professional work, as well as in conversations with friends and women in my personal circles, I noticed a common theme: many women were struggling with dating and relationships, not necessarily because of unresolved trauma, but because they lacked confidence in their decision-making when it came to choosing partners and navigating relationships.
I often saw women second-guessing themselves, overlooking red flags, or jumping back into dating before taking the time to reflect on what they truly wanted and needed. As I continued studying the science of relationships, attachment, communication, and dating patterns, I realized there was an opportunity to help women approach dating with greater clarity and intention.
That realization led me to create The Head & Heart Edit . My goal is to help women make decisions that honor both their emotions and their values. We often hear about following our hearts, but healthy relationships require both emotional awareness and thoughtful decision-making. Through coaching, I help women build self-trust, identify patterns, and date in a way that aligns with who they are and what they want for their future.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career has been rooted in helping people navigate life’s challenges. Looking back, relationships have been a common thread throughout my professional journey, even before I realized they would become such a central part of my work. While studying criminal justice, I often examined relationships through a very different lens. I was interested in understanding the dynamics that contributed to domestic violence, unhealthy relationship patterns, and violence against women. I wanted to better understand how people make relationship decisions, why individuals stay in harmful situations, and what factors influence the choices people make within intimate relationships.
Today, I am a therapist working toward clinical licensure and the founder of The Head & Heart Edit. What sets me apart is my ability to combine professional experience, relationship science, and practical coaching to help women make healthier dating decisions. I believe successful dating is not just about finding the right person—it’s also about trusting yourself enough to choose wisely.
The journey has not always been easy. Building a business while balancing graduate school, clinical training, and a full-time career required a lot of persistence and faith. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that clarity comes through action. You do not have to have everything figured out before taking the next step.
What I am most proud of is creating a space where women can approach dating with both their head and their heart. I want people to know that my brand is not about helping women “get” a relationship. It’s about helping them build self-trust, recognize patterns, and make choices that align with the life and love they truly want.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Just get outside!!!!! Whatever you like to do there’s a bit of everything. There are restaurants, museums bars, lounges, family friendly stuff just get out and explore. I’m sure you will find whatever your heart desires to enjoy life with the ones you love.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize a few people who have played an important role in this journey. First, my friends—they know who they are. Through years of conversations, shared experiences, and allowing me to analyze and discuss many of their dating and relationship situations, they helped inspire much of the work I do today.
I also want to thank my friend Audrey for recommending me for this interview and for her continued support and encouragement.
Most importantly, I want to recognize my husband. He has been an integral part of building this business by taking on much of the technical and operational side, which allows me to focus on the coaching work itself. His support and belief in my vision have been invaluable.
This business may have started with my idea, but it has been strengthened by the people who have supported me along the way.
