Meet Tim Hays | Special Effects Makeup Artist and small business owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Hays and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
We’ve built our brand around creating products that are not only visually strong, but also comfortable, functional, and easy to use. Whether it’s custom character teeth or other items we offer, we prioritize how the product actually works for the customer.
We also stay closely connected to our audience through conventions and direct feedback, which allows us to continuously improve and adapt. That hands-on approach has helped us build trust and repeat customers over time.
Ultimately, our growth has come from listening, refining, and consistently delivering products that meet real-world needs.

What should our readers know about your business?
My business grew out of my background in art, design, and the film industry. I previously ran a special effects makeup shop, but stepped away to focus on teaching and advancing my work in film and television. That experience strengthened my skills and perspective. After thinking about building something new for a long time, I returned to entrepreneurship and took the leap. This business allows me to combine hands-on craftsmanship with practical product design in a creative space.
What sets us apart is our focus on realism and how our products perform in real use. We create products that not only look believable but also fit well and feel comfortable to wear. We’re most proud of seeing that come through in how people respond, and we’re excited to continue developing unique designs that people haven’t seen before.
Getting to where we are today hasn’t been easy. I’ve always believed in myself and what I could create, but building a business from the ground up comes with constant challenges. From production to costs to growing into new sales channels, it’s been a process of learning and adapting along the way. Staying consistent, trusting my instincts, and being willing to adjust when something isn’t working has been key.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to bet on yourself. I’ve also learned the importance of listening—to customers, to feedback, and to what’s actually working. Not every idea will land, but staying patient and consistent has made the biggest difference.
At its core, Liquid Octopus is built on real experience and a genuine passion for creating. We’re not trying to follow trends—we’re focused on making products that work, feel right, and continue to improve over time.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was coming into town, we’d go all in.
First stop is Atlanta—no question. We’d hit Little Five Points, walk around, check out the weird shops, and just take it all in. Then straight to The Vortex for burgers—it’s one of those places you just have to experience.
At some point we’re heading to Puttshack for indoor mini golf. It’s competitive, a little chaotic, and way more fun than it should be.
Being sports fans, we’re definitely catching an Atlanta Hawks game. The energy is great, and it just feels like a full night out.
One of my favorite spots is the Georgia Aquarium—it never gets old and is always impressive.
We’d also check out Oakland Cemetery. It might sound unexpected, but it’s one of the most interesting and visually unique places around.
Then we’d hit the Center for Puppetry Arts—great if you’re into film, practical effects, or just want to see something different.
If it’s Halloween season, we’re 100% going to Netherworld—that’s non-negotiable.
We’d slow it down a bit around Trilith and the surrounding area, and if we’ve got time, head up to the Stone Mountain for a hike.
Honestly, this area has so much to do it’s hard to see it all in a week—that’s part of what makes it such a great place.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My dad – James Hays – seeing his dedication is an inspiration.
