We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeyneen Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jeyneen, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have spent so many years avoiding what was in my heart for various reasons. I was scared to fail. I suffered from anxiety and depression, leading up to a hospital visit due to suicidal thoughts and anxiety attacks. I had low self esteem. Hell, I was a young black woman in America. Every possible obstacle or distraction to keep me from pursuing my goals, I had it. I got tired of ignoring what I wanted for my future. I got a therapist and a life coach, and with that support they helped push me to live a better life. I started this business because its been something I wanted to do since childhood, and with Covid shutting things down, I had no choice but to go for it! My business is called KNOCKOUT Cosmetics, because from this point on I plan on knocking out every obstacle, every negative thought, any sleepless night, ANYTHING that will get in the way of my dreams and goals. This business was me jumping head first into a better path.

What should our readers know about your business?
So my business has two main factors. Glitter and anime/comic book inspiration. Everything in my website is based off a character from either an anime or comic book hero. I chose this, outside of the fact that I’m a huge nerd, because as someone who deals with mental health issues, the origin stories or plots of these characters are inspiring. So many of them have obstacles as tall as mountains, and they never give up, they don’t care what others say, they know what they want and they let that drive them. Starting my business during the beginning of Covid quarantine was definitely a struggle, and with so many people starting businesses I was scared I wouldn’t be able to stand out. The hardest part has been keeping my mental health in check. The main thing I’ve learned is that if you doubt yourself others will do the same, you HAVE to believe in yourself no matter what. I just want people to see me, and my business and know that mental health is such a struggle BUT can be overcome, it takes help, support, and patience and love for yourself.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Considering my best friend, who has been in Germany the past year(army) is coming to the states next week in excited for this question! Honestly its a bit hard to say with covid, but we usually always hit up a taco spot because she’s never stationed in a place with good Mexican food like LA. Outside of covid we would normally hit the beach, maybe go to the GS sports bar and lounge (a black owned spot in LA,super dope) and honestly just spend lots of time with her family. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
For sure my therapist and life coach. As far as my business venture goes my life coach, Vee Prince, has been my biggest motivator. Now believe me, I have so many friends and family I could thank as well. But without Vee I FOR SURE would have never stepped into entrepreneurship. She helped me see it was possible and guided me.
