Meet Gene Micofsky: Composer, Songwriter, Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gene Micofsky and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gene, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I grew up viewing success in the music business as a destination, in that you travel from point A to point B and the rest is cruise control. As I started working professionally I learned there’s only a point A and you will chase B forever and ever. The worst thing you can do is get comfortable.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I wear many hats in the music business. Not only do I compose scores for film, TV and games, but am also deeply involved in songwriting and record production. The biggest challenge is the balancing act that comes with assuming all that responsibility. However, I’m energized by the constant variety of opportunities that comes from working in this manner, and I wouldn’t change a thing. I am thrilled to announce a new single of mine called “Here For You” will be available everywhere digitally Friday, January 29th.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles has such a vibrant nightlife, with an abundance of excellent dining options. Needless to say I love taking newcomers to a cool restaurant or bar. Some of my favorites are the low-keys stops: Crispy Pork Gang in Thai town. Salsa and Beer in North Hollywood. Other stops might include drinks on the rooftop of Perch. Live music at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood.. A romp through The Last Bookstore downtown. Stand up comedy at the Hollywood Improv.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I can’t imagine making it this far without the support of my family. I was fortunate enough to have parents that encouraged the absolutely insane notion of their son becoming a professional musician. My girlfriend Taylor helped me to rekindle my desire for performing my own music in public, which eventually lead to making records and touring the world. For that, I am eternally grateful. For over a decade, Gregory Kasunich has been one of my closest collaborators. I have scored almost everything he has directed, and he has been a tremendous influence on the outcome of some of my favorite creations.
