Meet Justin Young | Musician, Producer, Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Honestly, being a musician is all I’ve ever known. It kind of happened before I can remember. I started playing drums in church when I was 3. Ever since then making or playing music has just been a basic function for me, like eating or sleeping. I’m addicted basically.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My adaptability really defines who I am as a creative. Being able to go from creating an instrumental, to laying down vocals, to mixing and mastering song, then to playing live instruments. A jack of all trades. I was pretty much a self taught drummer when I was young, learning new instruments as I got older. I moved to Atlanta where I taught myself how to produce. I eventually met Campaign Hundo and he taught me how to rap and engineer. Since then I’ve worked with multiple big name artists and labels. Being blessed with musical gifts made it easy to learn these things but not giving up was the hard part. There were definitely times when it felt like I didn’t enjoy what I was doing or felt like it didn’t matter. There would be times when I actually thought I was done with music. Realizing that I was just comparing myself to others helped me get out of that mindset. Reconnecting with God also continues to be a huge part in overcoming internal battles.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Out here in Chicago, man there’s too many good food spots to count. Maxwell’s, Harold’s (the real one, not the Atlanta knockoff), Sharks, Lou Malnati’s. Or, if you’re an outside type of person, there’s no shortage of beaches near the city. The Bulls aren’t that good but the games are always lit. There’s a plethora of dope dive bars here with cheap drinks. If you’re high class then downtown Chicago has some of the best high rise restaurants in the world. If you’re into the punk scene, there’s always plenty of underground shows to mosh at. There’s something here for everybody

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shout out to brothers Campaign Hundo, Hoodrat LaFlare, Diego YK, JucCo, Locks, PhotoSensei (my boy Sid), and shoutout to HRGB (HOODRICHGOTHBOYS). Also shoutout to my bands Conversation Piece, Conscious Renaissance, and New Bad Animals.
